As soon as a monster is visible there is no running anymore.

"water" traps are....

...the prime cause of death for my sorcs. I love ascii mode but am considering changing to some graphic tiles just to avoid those silly things.

Naturally I would welcome an option which prevents me from stepping on "known" traps.

ToME - The pike you are wielding appears to be cursed
Me -What pike???!!! Oh, damn.
I just ran into a trap of silent switching, and I'll wager theres a minor, crucial bug involved. I had been wielding an artifact weapon, I hit the trap, never saw it before, so I eye my character stats and equipment. His artifact weapon appeared in his inventory (window Choice), and also showed as equipped (window Term-6). 2 copies of the same artifact? I wondered what would happen with 2 of the same artifact in inventory, so I struck T (roguelike keyset) to unwield the wielded artifact, and lo, my Term-6 updated to show me wielding a non-id'd mace.

I wouldn't be supprised if you hit the trap, reviewed your equipment, saw nothing seriously amiss, and went on with your journeying.

Hmm. That might actualy make for an interesting trap: Pick two stacks of potions or scrolls in the players inventory, and copy the type from one to the other... 'I had 4 scrolls of recall and 2 of teleport... now I have 6 scrolls of teleport....'

Damn, just hit a bowel-cramps trap, for insta-death!

I was corrupted-slow from demon skin, and running:

You are getting faint from hunger! -more-
I'm melting! -more-
Dump the screen?

No chance to eat anything, just death.

No kidding. Anyone with Anti-magic has no other way of getting back to town quickly.

Sex/Height/Weight Change. When I choose to be a male hobbit, I'd like it if I got to b a male hobbit and not, e.g. a female hobbit-shaped giant.

i believe these sex-change traps (can a trap of neutrality be counted as a sex-chenge trap?) and size-altering traps don't influence gameplay perse. but than, flavor is important to me as well. i would like a male character to STAY male...

When I think of Nethack's really nasty polymorph traps, the sex-chance traps are just a stupid but otherwise harmless annoyance.

I had a Piety Reversal trap which was mostly annoying as the character had been incredibly pious up to that point (was around 900 PI level) which *poof* got flipped to -900 pi.

Bah.

Ack! I didn't know such a thing existed. *cold shivers*

I do have to wonder which god you were worshipping, though, as my characters' usual piety is around 40-50k or so, once they are midgame level. Still, any reversal sounds like no fun at all....

my guess is that mr. runt set off the worst trap of piety loss. IIRC this trap lowers piety by 1800.

I must say that with my playing style, i am not familiar enough with traps to really be qualified to say what the nastiest one is. i tend to play a sorceror and take great care to always cast sense hidden as my first action upon entering a level, and always cast it upon reaching the end of a trap detected zone before I take a single step. I always know where the traps are, and give them a wide berth.

EDIT: Oops... BIG time necropost...

Trivia for you newbies:
When this thread was first posted, it was very easy to step onto a known trap. Say thank you to the developers the next time you get a message preventing you from walking onto a trap.

Now you must purposely use the 'blunder' command (or try to disarm) in order to step onto a known trap. They are much less deadly as a result.

The Blunder command for those who don't know is:
#B<dir>
