A few of my (least) favorite things

Well, I don't have the problem anymore, but the solution requires cygwin.
1. download and install cygwin
2. run cygwin
3. change the extension on the archive from .tar.tar to .bz2
4. type "tar -xvfg /cygdrive/c/path/filename.bz2"
I didn't write the command down and am unsure of the 'g' parameter. 'c' is the drive letter. Be sure to use foreward slashes '/' instead of the usual backslashes '\' in the path.
Alternately, go to the ToME IRC channel when DarkGod or some other Unix savvy person is online and ask them.
Winace, a utility Neil recommended does not work. Winrar might, but since I had previously installed cygwin for use with sourceforge's anonymous CVS I didn't bother trying winrar.

Well, then, it was someone else.
I have another problem, though. Microsoft VC++ doesn't like LUA. I don't know why, but the linker barfs and all the errors involve the LUA interpreter files. I can't figure out gcc and nobody on #angband is remotely helpful. (#tome is completely dead right now) Specifically, I can't figure out how to actually feed gcc the files.

One last little addenda to this marvelous post...
I think that Bloodletters of Khorne have replaced Beholder Hive-Mothers as my least favorite enemy. The people who coded ZAngband had no conception of the fact that their monsters might someday be pumped up to level 150. The practical upshot of this is that a Bloodletter of Khorne (above level 130 or so) will knock you out and kill you in one round almost without fail. Regardless of your AC or HP. It's ridiculous.
As long as I'm on the subject of Z monsters, Shamblers are a million times worse than Great Storm Wyrms and Unmakers will ruin your day as only Unmakers can.
I've heard from a few sources that Z monsters are on their way out. I say, the sooner the better. I've lost enough high level characters to massive Bloodletter-induced head wounds. And I don't think that anyone besides me actually plays with them on.

Above the hearth was a huge pokerwork sign saying "Mother". No tyrant in the whole history of the world had ever achieved a domination so complete.

Having fought through demon pits on Z, the idea of those beasties pumped up to 150 just....yikes..... (I hadn't thought of that aspect before, but I'm definitely not playing Z monsters anywhere but Z. Totally different game.)

One good thing (perhaps the only good thing) about playing with Z monsters on is that it allows Symbiants to get some interesting and powerful creatures. Also, some of the most powerful high-level nonmoving uniques (Shumah-Gorath, Yibb-Tstll, Abhoth) are in Z).
This still doesn't justify losing all your scrolls to Arch-viles on level 15 of Mirkwood, but at least it's something.
PS. I guess the end of the world is nigh because DarkGod has 666 posts today. Guess I'd better repent or something...

At low levels, anything that multiplies, particularly things that multiply and poison you.
At medium levels, druj are my nemesis.
At high levels, the most annoying are GWoPs. They're not incredibly difficult to beat, you just keep pounding away and making sure your HP don't get too low... But all the HP makes it rather slow, especially when more than one appear.
I had to vote for Qs, though. Specifically greater draconics, because of the huge flying, breathing walls of hitpoints that they summon. If you don't get them quick, the buggers will keep you occupied for quite a while.
Edit: wait a minute, why did you resurrect this old thread? Bah, should have looked at the dates before responding.
