Determined

#1 Post by Valdor »

Hi @ll

I 1st played Moria on the Amiga in probably 1991 when I ordered it from a PD site, when I 1st loaded it up I thought I had been ripped off! But then I went back to it a few times and sure enough, once I worked out what was going on I started to get hooked.

I always went mage and I never got past dungeon level 49 I think (about 8-10 below the finial iirc.)

So anyway, all these years and I have played a few varients, with TOME 2.x.x being my favourite.. and I still have NEVER completed the game... I admit to getting bored, I end up scumming and getting more bored and in the end I die, always. I have never played anything but a mage related...

I hate myself for it! :o :D because I *adore* the game.

Ok, so I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and I just downloaded 2.3.5 for Android, frikken genius! The nature of the touch screen means that I have to play it slower which means I am going to be more careful and the character will mean more to me. S

I will never choose an easy character but this time I have gone for a Maia/Sorcerer/Classic, 98 quests. just got a Katana of Aman on lvl 1 which has got to be 25000 but bree is capped at 10,000!

So anyway, what is it with Maia? I can't find t-o-m-e.net and no references to them anywhere? What happens when they become more experienced because the description is fairly vague, it points to advantages but there are no modifiers, it suggests an experience disadvantage but the modifier is 0%?

Anyone want to give me some good advie about this character?

If not I have have enjoyed putting my thoughts dowb somewhere because my main aim is to be totally focused on winning with this char!

All the best.

Valdor (born in 1991.)

Haven't played Tome 2XX in ages, but good luck, I don't know maia and all of that anymore.

Try ToME 4 on your PC some time... It will probably also get ported to tablets and like stuff some day.

I'm only working off of memory but Maia basically get free stat increases as they level and a proportional increase in stat caps. If you're playing with the birth option that removes stat caps anyway (don't remember what it's called) they're really a pretty terrible race unless you want a challenge.

I haven't played a Maia all the way through, but as I remember they gain a point in every stat every 5th level or so. That can be helpful in the beginning levels. Once you max out your stats it is irrelevant.

However, they also have aggravate, which more than makes up for this advantage. Sorcerors in particular should not have aggravate.

They get is experience drain above level 20, but that doesn't hurt much.

Just about any race other than a yeek is going to be easier to win with. Either pick one with lots of hp (troll, ent, dunadan) if you tend to play fast or one that has great spellcasting ability (dark elf, high elf) if you are more cautious.

Maia is one of those races that shouldn't ever have been in the game, IMO, at least not as it is currently. It basically looks like a Munchkin race when choosing during birth, but the surprise at level 20 may nullify your class choice entirely (Hint: don't be a summoner, symbiant, or use any form of summoning). That's just broken.

Yeh have tried tome 4 a few times but I am just too old skool, have to play ascii otherwise it just doesn't feel right!

Ah so stats increase as the character progreses... I did notice on some leaderboard that there was a Maia, I think summoner that was 2nd or 3rd on the league table so assumed that there was a way of playing effectively. I always play harder chars which is one reason why I have never defeated the game I suppose.

Got lvl 11, Sorcerer - nice spellbooks, all looking good so far, sold that kantana for 25,000 which has given me loads of options. (got Vision and Identify already which is nice early on, only down to lvl 3 Barrow.)

That link didn't work to the old archive of t-o-m-e.net, :(

The leaderboard at oook is sorted so that characters with the highest experience are at the top. The easiest characters don't generally get up there because they are winners at much lower scores. Characters that can use pets to get experience (summoners and so on) can generate enormous amounts of experience by creating an army of chain summoners and just hiding while their army wipes out the level.

Experienced players tend to try to play weird character combinations and these often end up at the top of the leaderboard. There are a fair number of yeek hermit characters, and these are obviously due to people trying to show off (like me). No one would play one of these as a route to an easy win.

You can switch the graphic mode to ASCII :)

Hey Loremaster, I am from Mcr also ^^

Tome 4 in ascii huh... I didn't even check, tried it for a minute or two then binned it. I will have to look again..

A yeek hermit sounds like a challenge! My best effort on tome was a gnome runecrafter but I have never had the heart to play a runecrafter again, I took it really badly when he died! it was way in the depths but still not the finish line. I got complacent with the power of crafting and just bit off more than I could chew in the mines iirc, didn't play any roguelike again for about 2 years after that!

Ok so I suicided the maia! Have gone with a traditional High Elf Sorcerer... Am starting the bree quest and am lvl 2. I hope to win with this character, this is it! :x

I've won with an alchemist (cheesy and lots of farming) and an Ent Sorcerer. The hit point bonus on the Ent really helps to offset sorcery penalties. Necromancy also saved me once or twice ;)

I also had a Darkpriest I think could have won. Pretty cheesy class once you get the curse on hit thing rolling. (I got bored with that character about halfway through angband)

By far the easiest character to win with in regular Tome 2.3 is a lost soul death mold sorceror worshiping Melkor, with special rooms always on. It takes a while to learn how to move and use the death mold powers, but once you do it is trivial. Pick out rings from keyhole and checkerboard vaults- you will get speed, Nenya, and Vilya in no time. Kill some low level monsters to get a few levels and then pick out all the spellbooks. Add a few light armor pieces and level up- I like to kill druj. The rest of the game is trivial.

I usually kill myself from boredom!

That's odd. It still works fine for me (just clicked it to test. Not cached, it just loads fine). Almost all of the old tome spoiler files can be found there, including Lord Dimwit's guide. Perhaps your, or that site's server's connection was hiccuping the moment you tried it.
I was really happy to find that link a while back.

Past two weeks I've been trying a deathmold lost soul alchemist. Didn't succeed yet, but it's got potential.

Funny, this topic made me play tome2 again. Is it just me or is T4 much easier. No coming round a corner to meat a floating eye for instant paralysis followed by a slow and inevitable death of a thousand touches (lost to chars to that a couple of days ago). Stll a good fun game though
