Player roll call: If T3 were released today, would you play?

#1 Post by LordBucket »

There's recently been a small resurgence of T3 discussion on the mailing list. However, some of the people most strongly in a position to directly influence a T3 release have stated that they are "lurking" and waiting to see what happens.

So, what some of us need to know is how much interest there is in the project. I personally see very little reason to devote time and energy to designing a game that only a handful of people are ever going to play. I'm sure other feel similarly.

So, I would like to pose the question: hypothetically if a full, complete and finished ToME-3 were released and playable right now, would you play it?

We're not asking for commitments to develop. We'd just like to know if there are enough players still around to justify anybody else working on it. Pretend it's done. Ready to go. Finished. Are you even here reading this site and would you know that it existed? Would you download it? Would you play it?

Yes. Like a shot.

I've been lurking for months now, bored of ToME 2.3.x and just checking the site out of morbid curiousity and the (now very occasional) times when a newbie needs some help.

I would play it and get involved on the forums and I'm sure there would also be an increase in new interest. I've seen any number of new players arrive this year, realise that the ToME project is going nowhere and then simply lose interest. Likewise, older players like me can't really find much to talk about on ToME anymore, because we all know exactly how it works and have completed it umpteen times.

I agree with Icky. 2.3 is trivial for me now- I haven't played seriously in months.

I also see new players pop in, ask some questions, and then bail out when they realize no one is hanging out here any more.

However, I wonder how much of the problem is with the forum spamming we had last year. That destroyed the community and many people never came back. I enjoyed Tome for many years, and new players should be able to get the same enjoyment. Not being able to ask questions or boast seriously cuts into the fun. Rebuilding that community is going to be difficult.

My ASCII game rotation is ToME -> Vanilla -> Dwarf Fortress. Right now I'm in a Vanilla mood but I definitely plan to play more ToME in the future, and would be excited to try a finished ToME 3.0.

edit- will post this over at oook in case people don't visit this forum regularly anymore...

I was interested in developing with ToME 3 (despite lack of programming skills ;-) however the general lack of activity here and a sticky problem with the wilderness map code led me to go elsewhere. I'm deep into my JBand project now so the answer is "not soon".

So even if someone else wrote the code, you still wouldn't play? :(

Not for the next few months anyway. Nothing against ToME, but my spare time is fully booked for debugging / translating and playtesting.

good luck with JBand! I hadn't really thought about it before, but having some kind of japanese character set instead of a latin-based one would probably look really cool.

I guess I'm also "lurking-and-waiting-to-see".

On the other hand, and unlike some other people here, I only won once in ToME, even though I have been playing on-and-off for several years now, so 2.3.x doesn't bored me at all.

I'm happy to keep on playing 2.3.x for a while, but would of course be delighted to play ToME 3.

I'm still playing ToME. A lot of ; ) On the pc and PSP. I would sacrifice a few ABBA-devoted-fans to speed up the development if it would be possible. I would definitely play it ; )

Quote from ML from Bucket Man:

"If a month goes by and we have a hundred people saying they'd play, I propose we put ourselves to work and make it happen.

If a month goes by and we have fewer than ten people saying they'd play, I propose we formally announce that T3 is finished and put this chapter of our lives to a close."

Argh ... still 83 to go. Well ... Dark Legions of Uber Evil and Shigeru Miyamoto could always come in handy ; )

EDIT:

Who the hell voted no? ; P

I'd play, probably even if it weren't fully completed.

To the dismay of those that stood by, about the body of Saruman a grey mist gathered .... For a moment it wavered, looking to the West; but out of the West came a cold wind, and it bent away, and with a sigh dissolved into nothing.

As long as it holds up long enough for us to beat the Aussies :)
