Yes, the possiblity to get to lvl 20 is there. but no one is whipped to use it. If you like to have a slower leveling, play the BD Level 1. I think then there is no difference betwenn ToME and angband. The vanilla town (and thus no wilderness) is available in the options.
I'm "Guest" from above still. I suppose if I post more often I might as well create an account. My intent was not to come here and troll on the game, because I think TOME has some wonderful concepts that I think other roguelikes would do well to emulate.

Oh, and I *did* get to level 15 or so in level 1 BD. My quest was to rescue the princess from rot jellies, about 20 or 30 of them, and there was one other unique in the level that I was able to kill quite handily once I had dispatched the jellies. I'm sorry to have to say that I completely disagree with you about there being no differences between ToME and Angband. In Angband, a session clearing out level 1 would raise you from level 1 to no higher than level 4 or 5. And certainly I've never, ever gained 5 levels in one kill in Angband like I have in TOME fighting a non-unique creature.

The rest of my character levels were gotten by fighting the wights in the mini quest dungeon next to BD. I think I was level 25 or so before I got my rear handed to me in one turn by the Wight King. The last three lines I got before being greeted with my tombstone was:

You enter a void portal.
The Wight King intones terribly!
What did I do to deserve this?

:)

Anyway, diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

I say no. Angband is the "gateway" into the depths of T.o.M.E. you gotta start with the milk before you get to the meat!

BD1 with a princess quest is more like Anband level 11 than Angband level 1.

If you don't like that, maybe you should start with 0 random quests.

Well, on subjects of balance, difficulty and fun all opinions are valid, but you should never say that a player is not *real*. Those playing without cheating on ToME are as real as any other player.

Is classic Angband better than ToME?

Is classic Angband better than ToME?

WELL OF COURSE IT ISN'T!

[boring history]
When I first started playing roguelikes a few years back it was because of Nethack. Now, theres nothing wrong with Nethack, but the classes are basically all either warriors or wizards in the endgame and the game became boring and tedius post-castle. After beating this 5 or 6 times, I began to look around for other roguelike games. When I first played Angband I was struck by how boring it was. Long, boring dungeon, filled with continually changing levels... the furthest I got was dungeon level 10 before I bailed out and played ADOM. Now, ADOM is also fine, but it is (in my opinion) too quick and difficult. Nethack game took me a few weeks, ADOM game took me half a day before I died. So I looked again. Somewhere along this I began reading r.g.r.* and came upon a post saying that ToME had the most things to do in a roguelike, so I took a look at it and some other interesting sounding Angband varients.
[/boring history]

When I first played ToME the first thing that stuck out was the huge amount of dungeons, uniques, items etc. along with the extra stuff such as gods, skill points, classes and races that played very differently the whole game etc. that Angand didn't have. IT WAS GREAT!

ToME is (too me) 100 times better than Angband! And all those who dare say otherwise... well they're welcome to their own opinions. But thier wrong. Darkgod you have created a masterpiece from a pile a trash.

(yeesh that was long winded...)

EDIT: Isn't that is. whoops.

I have to say, I agree with our frequently posting guest when he/she said that which variant is best depends upon the tastes of the individual player. I personally voted for ToME in the poll, because I enjoy it more than classic. That's not to say it's better - just that I like it more.

IMHO, as long as a variant works, then it's a candidate for the title of 'best variant', because it's sure to be someone's favourite. If you like ToME the most, then that's the best variant for you. If you like classic the most, then that's the best variant for you. If you like UMoria the best, then I might wonder "have you not heard of ToME?"; but then, who am I to judge? - I still sometimes give in to temptation and play NetHack on my Psion...

Hats off to Darkgod - he has put together a fine work of art here with ToME. It's certainly got me hooked. For the moment, at least...

I also voted for TOME

[boring history]
I started to play V after a article in an nonexisting computer magazine "Gambler". V, Adom, Nethack where presented there. I liked it very very much. V most from the 3. But after a while i started looking for something new. SchtBand (or something) was next, other came...
But one day I downloadet TOME and its the only variant I play for about 2 years. On my computer there are about 20 variants of V and I play only TOME. I dont think I will change to V again.

Just to add my 2cworth...

I DID try Angband classic a year or so back and was struck by how BARE it all was. There is so much TEXTURE and VARIETY in ToME that returning to Angband felt like going from the Jungle to the Desert.

Not to go too far into "balance", but I remember an interview with DG way back when when asked the reasons he was writing a new band, he replied "I wanted more POWER in the game".

Whilst that ethos got ridiculous in the earlier part of Zang/Pern, a progressive (and for the most part, sensible) pruning back of the wilder elements has come up with a game which is easy to play, easy to master, very hard to win (Lord Dimwit excluded, obviously) and has a variety of strategies and gamestyles accomodated within it.

The insistence on modularity has also been a godsend, and opens up imaginative room for everyone to tweak the game to their own tastes, or TOTALLY revamp the game. Yes, I'm aware that Angband is the source from whence all came, but ToME has almost branched off from that to become its own game (as Rogue is to Angband, so I think is ToME to Angband)...

Stability hasn't, in my experience, been an issue, unless you play with a CVS compile. In which case, you should know what you're getting into. The responsive nature of the maintainers and the frequency of versions make the bugs that do exist a far less frightening spectre than previously.

In short, I think that the ToME is the superior game, and if you prefer Ang-style, you could even write a module to reflect the Ang-balance, character classes and "stablity". The reverse would not be possible.

:)

Meddle not in the affairs of Nils, for she is subtle and quick to anger...

I think T.O.M.E. is better than classic angband. I also think Zangband is better than classic Angband. Why? Simply because there is more variety to keep me interested in the game.

In Angband, you start in one town and dive the depths of one dungeon. I like the idea of having multiple towns with an overland map and exploring various different dungeons.

I'm also not a hardcore player, so the difficulty in Angband has always kept me away from it. I'd play it for about a week and die many times to the point of frustration. Another year would pass and I'd try again with the same results. So far, T.O.M.E. has kept my interest the longest.

Hm. I didn't see an option for "I don't classify things like this."

I've played V way too much and I'm waiting for Z to finish reconstructing itself to try that again. So i'm currently here. Yay. 8)
