I played ToME long ago and was pretty good at it...even finished it with one character. Finished Moria back in 1985 (yes I'm old) and Vanilla Angband. Now I got a Mac and am playing ToME again (latest release version)...and I SUCK! I cannot get past level 1. What am I doing wrong?
Also, is there a website with all the documentation in hyperlinks? Scrolling ingame docs is so slow.

Hi
Welcome to the forum, and if you like ToME then there is a wiki which you can look at.
You will start in Bree. I suggest for the first few levels, you do the following:
Type in <Shift>+c (so a Capital C)
In the lower right hand corner are 2 settings Tactics and Explore
You can adjust these by entering <t> and <e> (keep cycling through till you see all the settings). You should set your tactics to Berserk, and your explore to Running. This will let you hit things more easily if you are a warrior and run away faster if you are a mage.

Re: Darkgod, I suxors!
Hell, a mage with Berserk and Running can finish the thieves quest barehanded if they're careful and know how to manipulate turns properly. Berserk gives you a flat +15 to damage per-hit regardless of your equipment, and a similar bonus to-hit (and a significant penalty to-AC, but if your opponent never gets a turn in melee then it doesn't matter).
If you just want to survive, roll up, oh, a RohanKnight Swordmaster. They can bull through most obstacles in the game with brute strength; their only major weakness is a lack of good ranged options.

Thanks all for the advice...are setting things up that way considered "cheating?" I like to play (struggle) fairly.

Setting the options is definitely not considered cheating- that is what they are there for.jtwadsworth wrote:Thanks all for the advice...are setting things up that way considered "cheating?" I like to play (struggle) fairly.

For what it is worth, I always set tactics to "coward" when playing a mage (or at least a sorceror). You can't hit anything, but it makes it harder for monsters to hit you. Setting explore to "running" reduces your stealth and searching, so there is a trade-off there also (although I almost never have it set anywhere else).
The game is very difficult to get far unless you start with an easy character. Later on you can try something difficult. I second the RohanKnight Swordmaster (make it a Zombie). You should easily kill anything you will see for the first few levels.
There are some "cheat" options that you can set using the "=" menu, and then your score isn't saved. A good learning strategy is to set the "Cheat Death" option. If you mess up you get to restart with the same experience and equipment. Just don't post the character or brag about it.
