Game gets very difficult after Barrow Down

#1 Post by Sealer »

Hello, I haven't been playing TOME for long (nor Angband in general), and I noticed that after getting through Barrow Down dungeon I'm a little bit lost, I'm unsure where to go, last time I went to Loriathan (I think thats the name) with my axe warrior and got absolutely annihilated in both quests I took (one of them being level 15, where my warrior was lvl 18). I'm wondering what resistances should I look for at this level, where should I head, and should I go for the random quests, or is it too dangerous? I enjoy the game and I wouldn't want to stop because of that.

I haven't played in a while, but I think the orc cave would be the next spot to go. I can't remember exactly were it is at. I think it is north-west of Bree. There is also the Old Forest that is west of Bree. This might be a better place to go.

Both locations are fairly close to Bree.

I personally like random quests, depending on your character build you can get some nice skills to complement your character. Karzack has it right, you probably want to hit the orc caves next and do the house quest in Bree if you haven't already. After that is when I usually hit the old forest. The first quest in Lothlien isn't too bad, the second one can be a hassle. I don't want to say any more without being spoily. Good luck in your game, it really is worth it in my opinion.

The second quests in both bree and lothlorian can be pretty tough. Unless I leave the barrow downs with a lot of nice equipment, I usually try the first couple of levels of the Orc Caves and Old Forest, mainly to see if there happens to be a dungeon town there. If not, I'll head to Lothlorian, do the house quest, and maybe do a few levels of mirkwood to try to get something nice from the next set of princess quests. Also, if you've picked up an early God quest, start hording scrolls of object detection and potions of enlightenment, maybe an everburning torch for wilderness travel, and try to get that done early.

The most important resist is probably free action, which you will eventually need in all of the post BD dungeons.

My current char has done all these things and not yet found anything with free-action. I'm tempted to start over, but i'll probably dive mirkwood and see if I get lucky, then head to the orc caves.

Agree about Free Action - is fine to take a risk that something won't breath such-and-such on you or cast this-and-that at you - but another thing altogether to be pressing your space bar while it hits you, it hits you, it hits you, it hits you ...

In the old "Moria" game if an ancient multi-hued dragon breathed gas at you that was it, finished - no resistance available, didn't matter what level you were - and it took so interminably long to progress, would be amazed if somebody somewhere didn't leap from a window at three in the morning.

If you want FA to start with, I suggest you play a Gnome. They also get the Blink ability.
