Think I played it Moria for the first time in 1991, my english wasn't that good at the time, so I had a bit trouble understandingeverything. Two years later or so, I discovered Angband and I've been addicted ever since. The TOME variant is bar far the best I've played so far.
Btw, Ludvig, nice seeing a fellow dane, not many of usaround
About two years ago, I found ADOM at some freeware site... I played it for about half a year or so, then it was followed by Nethack (two weeks) and Angband (1 month) and Zangband (2 months.)
Up to now, it's still ToME...
Though I'm still trying other *bands and roguelikes when I get distracted or so for a while... Dungeoncrawl has managed to hold my attention for at least two months... Sanband and Hengband lasted only two weeks...
I bet I'll stick with ToME for a long while... C U at the next poll...
Thou art forever bound to ToME!
Thy soul is mine to play with!
MOUAHAHAHHAHAHA

1986 - Rogue
BTW EOB is not a real roguelike because dungeons are not random... once you completed the game the fun is over
Too bad because I think it's the best computer RPG I've ever played... and it's really a game that would deserve a multiplayer version.
I used to play Rogue on my friend's XT or some such PC. Then in college I had a special account and I managed to weasel enough quota to compile Moria. My friends and I used to have Moria Parties. I had special routines to mask the executeables and all the libraries files etc has mail files so that you couldn't tell we were playing on the system. (Games were not allowed.) Later I got ahold of a copy of the BOSS source and compiled that too. We had Nethack on various Macs and mac pluses. I had a pretty good nethack character named Groo once. (Didn't we all?) Recently I have been playing Zangband and TOME on my Mac 8600. I really liked BOSS, and I'm sad it hasn't really survived. I think I found some sources somewhere, but of course they are in Pascal.
I downloaded kharne (think it's abandoned now :/ ) in... 2001 methinks. Then, when I understood that there were loads'a rogues out there, I played NetHack for a while, ZAngband for a short while, some Angband, SLASH'EM. lots'a DungeonCrawl, then found ToME ...still plays some little DungeonCrawl as well as ToME.
Started around 1983 on a game called Hack which eventually evolved into Nethack. Also in 83-84 was playing at University at Buffalo on a game called UBMoria, which eventually spawned the Angband series and Tome.
Hmm, first year of Uni, 19...92 i think, downloaded Moria for my Amiga A500. Then Angband for my mum's 386.
Then finally Zangband when i got my first PC.
And now onto TOME.
I think over my gaming history, the Moria line of roguelikes (I never really liked Larn, Nethack or Rogue) have probably taken up the largest percentage of my playing time. (Mind you, so far i have completed every one i have played)
Considering my job is a professional (As in paid) games designer, the whole series of games must be pretty good!
And currently TOME is the daddy of them all.
Generally TOME is much better than the previous versions, but i have noticed a tendancy to overcomplicate simple parts of previous games. For example, i don't see the benefit of having to make rods out of their constituent parts.
Basically, i could write an informed review of TOME, outlining the good and bad areas of the design, but i'd probably get flamed to kingdom come, and i don't want to annoy anyone, as you are creating a fantastic game!
Mike.........
(P.S. Before you ask, i have worked on Player Manager 2, Kinck Off 96-97, Dogs Of War, Warrior Kings, and Warrior Kings: Battles)

I downloaded and played Nethack about four years ago after reading a post about it on Slashdot and I was totally hooked. I don't think I played any other game for several months and I converted most of my friends too.
Then I started to try some other roguelikes, first ADOM, which I hated and still can't play for more than a few minutes at the time, then Angband which I thought was entertaining, but lots of small things annoyed me so much that I went back to Nethack again.
The first other roguelike that I began to accually play instead of just trying was ZAngband. I really liked how they took the best parts from both Nethack and Angband.
I believe it was 1987 when my father brought home an IBM 80/86 and a diskette with Rogue on it. I played that on and off until the 80/86 went the way of the Dodo.
I rediscovered Rogue in the form of PernAngband perhaps 2 years ago. I was stunned to find this Rogue-Like following of folks who've helped evolve the game.
Well Ive always been interested in computer programming (Good old Basic he he and Now C) and rpgs (if anyone remebers Fighting Fantasy books created by Steve Jackson of Games Workshop Fame), and I have a brother doing Games development at Uni, so I was always on a look out for a way to combine my hobbies.
I ran across Roguelikes fairly recently last year around June, First came across Zang then Ang and found the Variants page of Thangorodrim and my addiction was firmly taken hold, So have done a lot of trekking across the wonderful world of Roguelikes, So sampled Nethack and a couple of others but settled on ToME, I like playing other variants as they have some great ideas (play Kamband for a crazy funky trip) Hengbands got some great ideas too (need to brush up my Japanese for the edit files), and AngTk ("Well hello mister fancy pants!") but as it turns out Tome is the only I really play seriously its just really It feels like a living world and full of all sorts of Tolkieny goodness.
I just wish I ran across it a few years earlier, just think of all those hours I wasted on sport he he he
