Summoners, just a LITTLE bit OP?? (Poll inside!)

#1 Post by Sradac »

Not sure if anyone comes by these forums much anymore but i cant figure out how to post on the wiki so here this is,

I took a break from my maia sorcerer lost soul currently on level 74...slowly stair scumming to the top level 24 with a tome of flowing water and blowing winds. So I made a summoner. Played a few in the past and always thought they were kind of easy, not much fun. Took a true totem of a giant white mouse and went to the swamp south a bree, let it breed till I hada huge swarm of mice and went hunting through the swamp
Killed a few nagas got a couple crebrain totems while I was at it. Took down a 3 headed hydra got to level 10. Found a lizard king, swarmed the heck outa it too and yay a corpse! Got me a partial lizard king totem and level 12, found out I had a fate too so i went to check it out. Funny thing too, on the way to the soothsayer I thought you know I hope i dont get the "You are fated to die" fate None of my chars have EVER survived that.
Found out my fate...."You are fated to Die on level 1" hahahah oh great well this game is over lets go see what dark god has in store to kill off this char for the heck of it.
Went to level 1, found an empty level covered in an icy floor. Looked around, saw a novice fighter and a dark elven priest, "OK not that bad yet" I thought lets see what this lizard king can do. He made short work of them, but was immediatly hit by a barrage of ice blasts. "Ohhh time to die what are those in the distance cold hounds? Yep a pack of cold hounds! To my surprise he handled them quite easily too. OK one monster left...and its a chimera, shouldnt be that hard. Brought out a second king just in case. the chimera fell and got the message "You have overcome your fate mortal!"

SO my point is, I seriously think the summoner class is WAY overpowered! I was level 12 running around with 2 level 20 pets that are basically gods to what I'm fighting and I ever got around the fated to die fate pretty easily I didnt do a thing just let the kings handle it all. Im not saying huge nerf or anything, just maybe some more limits? Maybe you can only summon a creature your level or lower? Or increase the chance of true totems to break and increase upkeep cost on partials? Not sure if the second is possible without making ALL pets including ones summoned from elemental tomes and necromancy cost more. I dont know just seems like summoners can win the game way too easily guess I'll go save the princess from the green icky things now, lol too easy.

Why should all the classes be equally powered anyway?

(You do realize that you were just lucky in that deathfate right? The ones I'm used to have things like great wyrms of many colors at least.

Not saying equal but I dont really see any scaling at all, summoners start out being able to summon hugely powerful monsters right from the start, there's no building up to greatness to it. In my mind i see a summoner as starting out being able to summon up nothing more than insects and rodents but as they grow in power they could eventually move on the feats of greatness. Just picked up mindcraft too

yea, that will work great until you hit a shrieker mushroom match on BD2 with your 3 lizard kings out.

Yes, Summoners are boring and lame the way they're implemented in 2.4.x.

I saw that you got a couple of crebain totems... I do not recommend using them, they are better than shrieker mushroom patch totems though :)

I agree about summoners being generally overpowered, assuming that you are patient enough. I always get killed because I head to the bottom of Land of Mountains as soon as I get a climbing set, and then die when a hru shows up.

On the other hand, you were lucky on the death fate. If you had gotten something like an ancient dragon you would have been dead instantly.

Well I see what you meant about the shrieker mushroom patch! Was on the second level of the orc caves and one managed to make my kings hate me very much im justlucky i already learned mindcraft so I could jump around with displacement waiting for my word of recall scroll to go off. This character has gotten out of some sticky situations so far, level 18 still got my king totem and a bunch of baby red and green dragon totems. The game must be quite angry that I escaped my first fate, just got You are fated to die on level 14 lol, maybe I'll take this char to the win with all my escape tricks.

Half-Elf Summoner, I was male but apparently something happened to me and now im neuter lol! Other than that there's nothing really odd about this char, killed 6 named Smeagol, Bullroarer, and Brodda's corpses are in my house, Mughash, Wormtongue, and Ulfast didnt leave bodies. No artifacts yet other than a buncha junk arts i sold to the black market, have the teleportation corruption im trying to find a cure for, oh wait I found the Hatchet of Echel but its just sitting in my house in bree. Thats it, dont know maybe I just have really bad luck.

-EDIT-

Was wondering what you guys suggested focusing more on, my melee skills or my mindcraft? I have a Morning Star of Gondolin(2d6 +9, +5) (+1) i picked up from a princess quest and I got a feeling if I had my combat and weaponmastery above 7.600 and 6.900 it could do some nice damage when baddies get close to me. I have never played a char with mindcraft so i dont know how powerful it can get right now its only 5.200 with a .300 modifier with skill points put into it. mindcraft worth it? If not maybe I'll switch to necromancy which i also picked up from a lost sword quest.
