How long have you played ToME without winning?

#1 Post by christopher »

Hey, why not. If you HAVE won, pick however long it took you before you did win. Myself, I've played ToME for maybe six or seven months total, and I've been close to winning several times, though I haven't actually won yet. And this is WITH a couple of years of playing (and winning Nethack 6 times) other roguelikes.

Of course this doesn't take into consideration your actual real time hours playing, or experience in other roguelikes but, hey.

I won ToME after having played roguelikes for two years, but the first several months of that was with Vanilla so I voted "a whole year".
Zothiqband -- still an Angband variant.

Whoa! 2 years and 6 ascensions! 6 monts and several close wins!
You must be a GREAT player! :-O
I didn't say it was your fault. I said I was going to blame it on you.

Took me a year to win (Theme, not ToME itself) after a year playing ToME. This was with, oh, around 6 years previous *band experience (Sangband and Vangband mainly) and not winning them ever.

LOL. Have you ever actually played Nethack? Once you get the hang of it you can easily win most of your games, and the only losses come from unlucky insta-deaths. I actually stopped playing Nethack because I was bored of it. ToME at least is (IMHO) harder, plus the classes honestly play differently.

We must also take into consideration how many hours a day I play these things sometimes. :)

Well, yu're probably right, but I can recall in rec.games.roguelike.nethack of people playing for even 20 years with no ascension. (But yes, the playing hours do count.)
No, I personally am not a great player, I must admit it.

I think I first started playing Moria variants early in high school, but never actually beat any of them (legitimately) until ToME.

Then again, I'm of the opinion that Geomancers might be one of the easiest ways to win.

About 15 years. Played Moria for a while. Discovered Angband. Played a long time. Then I saw the light and was introduced to ToME, 3 years ago (?). I had my first and only win with an Ent Monk last fall.

I haven't played since then, even if I am tempted by "Theme".

I never was a regular. I've been generally playing one player during Christmas time every year.

Somehow, I have lost interest in fictions. I feel like I'm not learning anything useful (but still have fun playing the game, but that doesn't seem to be enough! :-)). Maybe my ToME addiction will come back and I'll play ToME 4 with Theme v7 next year ?? ;-) I guess I still have at least a subconcious interest since I get back staring at the forum once in a week ;-)

Have fun playing ! :-)

Played *bands for... how long? *counts on fingers* 19 years? Finally just got my first winner. Even if it was a rather twinkish one, I'm still rather happy about it. :D

I've played *bands nine years, never won. Angband initially, followed mainly by Z, Cth and Pern. Then ToME, pretty much the one and only for three years plus.

ToME's wonderfully balanced and fun to play. But I've never made it to CL 30. My best characters have reached CL 29 so far. Maybe I'll try a DitL to give my characters a caution-based advancement boost...

About 2 or 3 days for ToME ... I tried 2.1.1 after discussing with a friend that were often on the #Angband channel. I playd Pernangband some time ago and so I tried a sorceror.
Had not much else to do at the time so I played rather continuedly and win a few day after...
Also tried an alchemist at the same time, tu make experiments on Ego-objects

Been playing ToMe for a couple of years now. Moria and Angband before that. Never won on Moria or Angband but won ToMe after about 3-4 months of playing. The first few months, I just couldn't break through the Character Level 30'ish barrier.

I don't know what changed or how I did it but now pretty much all my characters make it to Character Level 50 and dive Angband if I don't get bored with them before they do. I think I just became much more cautious and took to heart the mage's mantra "run away, RUN AWAY!!"

I've had 4 ToMe Winners and one *Winner* since then.

I think I'm not a good player but I managed to get past CL 30. But never reached CL 50.
Many classes are far easier in levelling, especially alchemists (scumming Bree edges? :D ).
I think the easiest class (not at start but whole game) is alchemist.
