I always stick with the lantern until I can get some sort of eternal 2+ radius light. Maybe it's just that at that point in the game the gold from an everburning torch is nummy, and it may come down to the Phial being not-too-hard to find (though definitely rarer than other variants), and a certain quest reward that I have a tendency dying trying to get that makes it a moot point.
For overland travel, I just take the darn lamp off.
Brass Lantern or Torch?

Exactly. You actually don't need any light when travelling through the wilderness. I suppose ambush rate might go up, and one extra turn to equip a light source before reading your scroll of teleport might kill you if you stepped in deep water and got ambushed, but if you do that, its on your own head. And if worried about the first trudge back from the dungeon being loaded with stuff and not wanting a lantern in the pack, just recall and make the treck before getting loaded. I always go for as large a light radius as possible, partially just for the ease of exploration and not just for things like floating eyes and purple mushroom patches.ShinesmanOffWhite wrote:For overland travel, I just take the darn lamp off.

This actually is sort of on topic, don't let the banner adverts fool you!

There are some gems before and after it as well! I'm especially fond of the stick +1...
For those who don't feel like checking the link, it's basically photoshopped modern ads for D&D items

Arioch_Arioch, those ads are hysterically funny, thanks for the link!
I use a brass lantern until I get an everburning torch. I'm an inventory slot hog and I just end up being extra careful in the dungeon because of the low light radius.
I also take off my light before I go travelling, brass lantern or not.
