IMO classic angband is the best roguelike game in WORLD now. Why? Because it is hard, classic, stable and *balanced*. IMO now Tome is too easy and too unbalanced game for *real* players:)) Pern was more balanced...

I dunno about balance. I always play semi-pure-warriors. I do not feel it is too easy. One thing is certain, I won't go back to Vanilla. ToME has so much more to offer than Classic. The flaws of ToME are quickly forgotten by benefits. Also, the future of ToME looks (to me) brighter than Classic.

I like chess, because it is hard, classic, stable and *balanced*. Of course this depends on your playing partner. :)
ToME has more everything than Angband. That's why I like it.

I like both, to be honest, along with several of the other variants like Zang, Heng, and Eyang. Which one I play depends on what mood I'm in. ToME's probably the one I spend most time on, but the others all have their good points.

Ang to Tome is like comparing apples to oranges... I like both, so no comment.

You know, I used to love Angband...but the complexity and variety of TOME has made it difficult for me to ever go back. There're just so many different ways to play TOME, so much variety and variation, so many different special items -- dungeons towns, special levels, dungeon guardians, quests, et cetera -- that the Ultima-loving, Bard's Tale beating, old-school gamer in me finds Vanilla to be somewhat staid and boring. Sure, there are supercharged classes in TOME that aren't really balanced, but 1) I avoid the really bad ones (since this isn't the spoiler forum, I won't name names, but most of you know the two or three I'm talking about); and 2) the enemies are correspondingly more dangerous too, what with leveled monsters, all manner of new attack forms and, if you're playing with all monster options on, some truly and horrifically unfair additions to the enemies list. Vanilla Angband will always have a special place in my heart, but I consider it on par with the original Wizardry trilogy compared to TOME, which is more like the expansive Ultimas, especially the later ones. And I look forward to continually bigger and better and more sophisticated TOMEs in the years to come.

Yeah, I've been computer-gaming for way too long. What's it to you?

Angband is less buggy, but only because it's less featureful. Angband is also slow, relatively boring, and has less varied gameplay.

If the worst criticism of ToME that you can come up with is to say that it's not "balanced," then I'm not worried, because "balanced" is one of those nifty magic buzzwords that doesn't really mean anything!

It can be argued, though, that Angband has changes that wrecked the "balance" of Moria! ToME today still deals with some of the breakage (most notably the problem of having to wade through piles of junk).

I hope to address some of them with Arda, but both Angband and ToME still have them, rest assured.

well.....

In reference to the very first post in this thread, I'd like to know what a "real" player is, since I fear I may be one of the plastic imposters. Heck, most everyone tends to be an imposter when faced with the standards of those who claim to be "real". Is a real player real like Mel was a real programmer? As well, I'd love to know the two or three totally imbalanced classes referred to somewhere in the postings.... I'd like to skip the dinking around and get to the *real* gaming with those classes! hehe

Alchemist and bard are probably the two most totally imbalanced classes (though, obviously, unbalanced on opposite sides of the scale). I thought you knew?

Anyone who uses an experimental class (Alchemist) to talk about ToME is unfortunately revealing his ignorance.

As for equality of class/race combos, My guess is that a Dark-elven Sorceror is no stronger in ToME 2 than a High-elven Ranger is in Angband 3.

I think Vanilla Angband is the classic and ToME is the best variant of that classic. (Z & Heng are also great, but ToME is best.) Vanilla is a mature game, whereas ToME has still lots of unrealized potential.

Codewise, Vanilla is better. I have never crashed it. I like the randomness of Vanilla, with no fixed quests or special levels. In ToME, these are too important.

With quests, hunting, and lots of good items, ToME has very accelerated startup, which I like. (My present Vanilla character is at dlvl 16, {excellent} items found so far are shield, shooter and some weapons.)

Summary: I give Vanilla five stars and ToME four and a half.
Vanilla is better, but ToME is catching up rapidly.

ToMe

#15 Post by Groothewanderer »

I like the variety in ToMe. I like the simplicity of Angband. I haven't played Angband for a long time (since I started playing ToMe), so it is pretty obvious which one I like better.

Now, where did I leave that copy of Moria 4.8.3???
