It usually takes a long time for me to find a decent everburning item. By the time I do, there's usually at *least* one other item in my kit that has a light flag. The flags are additive, so just because you're carrying a lamp or torch, you don't necessarily have a light radius of only 1. For me it's often 3 or so.

One of my characters finally got lucky and found the Phial of Galadriel. I think that's the first (maybe 2nd?) time I've found it in this game. (In Z, you usually can't help tripping over it at 50'-100'.) I find Elendil far more often here, by comparison.

For me it is lantern, too, assuming I have neither light nor FA in my other equipment, otherwise it´s torch. But it is a tough choice, and I have used radius-1 torch occasionally.

a matter of style i'd say. i prefer to have a light source with a radius of at least 2. on all other counts i'm with neil.

I wonder why the difference. Possibilities:

1. I travel more than you guys.

2. I pick up more treasure sooner than you guys, needing the extra slot sooner.

3. You guys all do Eol sooner than I do.

Maybe early use of Thunderlord's Guild is the key difference between torch-users and lantern-users.

I prefer to use an everburning torch, because I hate dealing with fuel. And when I play as a yeek something or another I don't have to worry about fuel weight, which is especially important, since I'm a pack rat.

I use the lantern. I also travel a lot, but I find it easiest to just stuff hte lantern in the pack since I don't travel with lots of junk in my pack. (except returning from the first trip to any dungeon) I'm a light radius junkie, though and try to go for 4 or 5. My first permanent light source is usually either the Phial or Elendilmir.

is there supposed to be a cap to the stacking of light radii? i had a recent character whose light supplies added up to 7 (excluding my vamp aura, which doesn't stack with anything), but i could only see a 5-radius area lighted around myself. i tried taking things off, and i found i could remove up to any 2 radius points worth of items without losing any lighted area. it didn't matter which ones i removed, so it wasn't a matter of one particular item having a light effect that, like the vamp one, doesn't stack.

Yes, light radius is capped on 5 (and boo on that).

Agreed. the engine can handle a sight radius of around 20, as this is how far you can see in daylight if you've just had your memory blanked.

I agree with neil, though when I use the torch I always have my tactics in such a way that I will not be paralyzed to death!

I usually find everburning torches in BD -- they're a good source of cash at those levels.

There are conditions where I'd use an everburning torch, but almost always by the time those conditions are met (have free action, for example) I've found a better light source of some sort or another.

Lantern for the extra light radius. I can always toss the oil or even dump them before I head back to town for the extra inventory space to carry loot. It's only mildly annoying to buy oil. The only thing I like to do is switch to something that doesn't need fuel for overland travel.

Okay, one thing that annoys me in the game. If you have a fiery sword or other light generating item, you shouldn't need to have a fueled light source to travel in the overland map. I haven't checked the ideas form to see if this idea was already posted so I appologize if this is an old subject. I died once in the wilderness because I forgot to fuel my lantern knowing that I had another object with "light radius 1" and got lost.

It doesn't happen any more but it was annoying when it did.

I stick to lanterns, but now that I think of it, a mage-type with an ever-burning torch and generous use of a light spell around corners could go far. We need a bouncing light beam. How about mirrored walls, eh?
