Brass Lantern or Torch?

It usually takes a long time for me to find a decent everburning item. By the time I do, there's usually at *least* one other item in my kit that has a light flag. The flags are additive, so just because you're carrying a lamp or torch, you don't necessarily have a light radius of only 1. For me it's often 3 or so.
One of my characters finally got lucky and found the Phial of Galadriel. I think that's the first (maybe 2nd?) time I've found it in this game. (In Z, you usually can't help tripping over it at 50'-100'.) I find Elendil far more often here, by comparison.

I use the lantern. I also travel a lot, but I find it easiest to just stuff hte lantern in the pack since I don't travel with lots of junk in my pack. (except returning from the first trip to any dungeon) I'm a light radius junkie, though and try to go for 4 or 5. My first permanent light source is usually either the Phial or Elendilmir.

is there supposed to be a cap to the stacking of light radii? i had a recent character whose light supplies added up to 7 (excluding my vamp aura, which doesn't stack with anything), but i could only see a 5-radius area lighted around myself. i tried taking things off, and i found i could remove up to any 2 radius points worth of items without losing any lighted area. it didn't matter which ones i removed, so it wasn't a matter of one particular item having a light effect that, like the vamp one, doesn't stack.

I agree with neil, though when I use the torch I always have my tactics in such a way that I will not be paralyzed to death!
Eyes burning, reaction rate diminished, vocabulary deteriorating...you have just been infected with the TOME addiction bug causing you to stay up to the wee hours of the morning playing this great game!

Lantern for the extra light radius. I can always toss the oil or even dump them before I head back to town for the extra inventory space to carry loot. It's only mildly annoying to buy oil. The only thing I like to do is switch to something that doesn't need fuel for overland travel.
Okay, one thing that annoys me in the game. If you have a fiery sword or other light generating item, you shouldn't need to have a fueled light source to travel in the overland map. I haven't checked the ideas form to see if this idea was already posted so I appologize if this is an old subject. I died once in the wilderness because I forgot to fuel my lantern knowing that I had another object with "light radius 1" and got lost.
It doesn't happen any more but it was annoying when it did.
