You don't need Visual Studio and you will not touch C# or C++. ToME, same as all other variants, are written in pure C. You can use any text editor, and any good C compiler. You can also use Visual Studio but be warned, it's very benevolent and it will allow you do stuff which other compilers will not. Alternatives: gcc from Cygwin or Borland C Compiler (commonly referred as bcc).
DarkGod is using xfte (editor) and gcc (compiler) under Linux.

I voted for Zangband, but because i know it good and played it very much (maybe too much). TOME is very new to me, and it looks very, very promising. But I just cast vote yet for a game that I almost dont know. That would be: because they vote, i vote too.
But anyway its a great game, and probably later i vote for it, when i know it better.
It has a lot of cool things like:
- fixed quests (a bit like in Zangband 2.5.0 - it dissapeared in the more recent versions).
- nice skill system
- tactics and movement
- probably a lot of things i didnt try or noticed
Anyway darkgod I'm impressed...

C#? Are you serious? That unholy abomination, bastard crossbreeded C++ with Java, taking worse from both of them?
If you want to fork Angband and starting new variant, you'll start with C, as currently Angband and all variants are written in C. If you're starting your own roguelike, pick a language of your taste.
If you have Visual Studio, you should be able to make Angband compile in it, and even develop a bit. Just make sure you have some friend with gcc, who is willing to test your changes, because Visual Studio contain many extension and allow many mistakes.

i cant beleive i forgot nethack. that was one of the games i started out on too. Although not a true rogulike, or maybe it is, i started on Alphaman. thats a funny game...as for the C thing, i have abandoned C# and have moved onto C. i am learning it pretty well and since i was familiar with C# it was easy starting out. There are some things that dont make sense to me though...like allot of the stuff that does the same thing as other stuff. anyway, i really wanna create my own angband variant and i dont know where to start..is there a tutorial site that anyone knows about or can any of u in computer land help me? <:^)
