The originial Moria was pretty brutal. I remember reading the stories of legitimate winners who basically made it through the Balrog by chugging potions of invulnerability right and left. The amount of stairscumming required sounded like A+ notfun, and I never got there (heck, I don't think I ever g...

Level 90, I guess...

I've been through the void and Melkor, so level 90 isn't exactly the whole story...

Eru is my daddy for mage types, but that's because I never did like Sorcerors. -50% hp? No thanks, but I do want divination spells and I don't want to pay for them. With Eru's god quests, max spellpower, and a good +spellpower staff, you get all of the effects in the divination school except *id* fo...

I generally take longer than I should, but that's because I have a bad tendency to worship Eru and he rewards those that aren't in a great rush.

My turn count on the "Earth, Wind, and Fire" competition is typical for me.

I think I first started playing Moria variants early in high school, but never actually beat any of them (legitimately) until ToME.

Then again, I'm of the opinion that Geomancers might be one of the easiest ways to win.

It really varies for me. Generally my base of operations is the town with the richest merchants, but of late I've gotten some really short shrift (armor and weapon both for 5000 in some towns, only 15k for books, etc...). In general, Laurenlindorean is my home since it has the most variety of shops,...

The one thing I have to say that the visible monsters window really helps with is lurkers, cloakers, death swords, and the like. Then again, it sort of defeats the whole purpose of being a mimic, so it almost seems like cheating. I don't know if It is coded in ToME (joke monster, maybe?) but it woul...

Having been told that I'm not a 1337 player for using only one window, I tried these things out. Auto-more and the message recall is OK, I guess, but it's just convenience. It may actually have contributed to my recent YASD, since I didn't have to directly "clear" the low-HP message which ...

Generally I play with neither. Small levels are really handy early on, but in the later places I like having the breathing room.

Unusual rooms I haven't experimented with yet.

It really counts on how you count a win. I've won twice in ToME, both times as a Geomancer (once for the contest), but only one of the two actually beat Melkor. In both cases, though, I was abusing summoning, and I need to get an "honest" win in there somehow. Sorcerors and me don't seem t...

My only beef with the magic system is that you can't cast spells at lower than their maximum level. So many of my purer mages have died because they can't cast another manathrust that I've given up on the mana school. Noxious Cloud no longer does damage to poison-resistant monsters after it switches...

I always stick with the lantern until I can get some sort of eternal 2+ radius light. Maybe it's just that at that point in the game the gold from an everburning torch is nummy, and it may come down to the Phial being not-too-hard to find (though definitely rarer than other variants), and a certain ...

Heck, I've won the game with a silly Kobold Geomancer, and I only use one window. Looking back, though, it'd probably be convenient to have the message log on screen so I can auto-more without hitting ^p all the time. Then again, I've been playing *band games for long enough that I know what most of...

Leaving the quest "open" has one fortunate side effect: you can Wish for the artifact you missed.

The chances of finding a Wish are one in a billion, it seems, but hope springs eternal.

My only winners so far have been Geomancers. Actually, I'm surprised the class was chosen for the challenge, since it's not exactly "challenging" once you know what you want. Geomancy is like a mini-sorcery skill, and in the end you get to have most of the spells you would have as a sorcer...
