Honestly, I think that because of the lack of escorts, not having access to both generic trees (as they can only be obtained by talking with NPCs) and artifact shop would make the game... fruitless. I'd still love to hear some survival tips; so far I figured out you can use being hunted to bait bosses (with 3% per turn chance) to pre-dug structures and that towns are easier to take out than normal maps.
