Re: Melinda and Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

The thread response which should have been utterly sufficient was on page 1 by Burb Lulls: in Tome there are women besides Melinda that are extraordinarily strong, and there are weak characters that are men. There are more male damsels than female ones. At that point, the only way to keep insisting...

Re: Melinda and Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

I've also never considered Melinda a trophy. Maybe she likes hanging around in an ancient fortress of a long dead race because its cool, or she has an interest in archaeology? That's exactly the kind of thing I'd like to see reflected in the actual game lore. As-is, I agree she feels rather trophy-...

Re: Melinda and Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

Agreed, but I feel like avoiding the worst reductive tropes is the best way to encourage women and minorities to get involved. Just out of curiosity: Do you think that because, allegedly, there is a bias in how women are portrayed in video games (and to a certain degree I would agree that there is)...

Re: Melinda and Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

Representing minority groups fairly is challenging from development standpoint I think, especially in a fantasy setting that's not directly equivalent to our own world. The easy route is to just add random skin tones to all the NPCs, but then you're only representing them in appearance and not cult...

I actually this is an awesome idea. Although if the PC is sleeping with him, it would probably make sense to get a discount on those 4k randarts :)

Re: Melinda and Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

Thanks for the civil and constructive conversation, folks. I think dropping the romantic bits of Melinda's plot would be a good starting point, but I'd still like to see more adjustments made. By changing the tone or emphasis of parts of her story, she would become a more interesting and memorable c...

Melinda and Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

Flame war time! The Melinda quest is a pretty standard "damsel in distress" trope. For a game that makes a point of having some bad-ass women characters, I think we can do better. A fairly simple solution would be for Melinda's gender to be chosen at random each game. This would just requi...

First win (on easy): Thalore Archer

I was finally able to beat the game on my third serious attempt with this race/class. I died four times (before wasting the rest of my lives on Atamathon), all of which were easily preventable: once to Urkus the High Tempest because I went to the zone at too low a level, once to getting greedy farmi...

[1.2.5] Adjacent vaults inaccessible

In Rak'Shor 2, I got two large adjacent vaults covering much of the map. One worked correctly, but the other has no door or other way in. I posted this over in dumb questions (http://forums.te4.org/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=43528&p=196476) and HousePet suggested that the problem is that the fact ...

Re: Can't figure out how to access vault

This has been up for a while with no replies, so I guess either it's not such a dumb question, or it's a really dumb question. Assuming the former for the sake of argument, maybe it's a bug? Is anyone interested in looking at my save file?

Can't figure out how to access vault

I'm on Rak'Shor 2, coming back down after killing the boss. There's a big vault that covers much of the level. I open it up and clear it, but after I'm done there's still a large unopened area. I searched all the walls around it for a diggable square - nothing. I tried teleporting into it from elsew...

Re: (X)ubuntu 14.04.41, missing libudev.so.0 - with a workar

This same issue is being discussed over at http://forums.te4.org/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=42678. I'm afraid that the symlink solution is controversial for the same reason making a copy of the file is - the fact that libudev0 and libudev1 aren't guaranteed to be binary compatible. I ended up building...
