I'll try, thanks -- probably in a day or two, as I'm about to start my heaviest teaching day, with little free time for important things like this.

I tried turning it off, with no effect; I'll try removing it, thanks. [later] Bingo! Changing the file suffix to .temp meant that I could create a new character. Odd, because I'd played quite a few characters with Embers enabled, and had a winner, before things started to go wrong. [later still] And...

...but perhaps that's a vain hope...

... I should still like to be able to play ToME again, though...

Well, I must admit that I've been catching up on other things that I should be doing -- so being unable to play isn't a complete disaster...

I checked, and they were listed as inactive. Just to make sure, I deleted them from my add-ons folder -- it didn't make a difference, I'm afraid. Clicking for a new character repeatedly, I've managed to see enough of the flash-past pop-up to see that it's not a Lua error message, but I can't manage ...

I renamed the T-Engine folder, so that my new install was genuinely and completely fresh -- so there's nothing in its Save sub-folder at the moment. But yes, I've got the old one. There's nothing in it called te4_log, though, or anything like it. I searched ny hard disk for te4_log, and it found not...

I've not repopulated my Save folder since reinstalling the game, so it can't be that I'm afraid.

Where do I find the log file, and do you have a link to pastebin, please? I've not used that before.

No effect, I'm afraid. I first insalled t-engine4-windows-1.4.6-nomusic, and when that made no difference I deleted world.teaw -- still no difference. Something is definitely flashing up when I click "New", but too fast for me to see what it is.

Ah, OK -- then the flash that I see when I try to start a new character can't be an error message; I'd disabled all add-ons (except for Vault, Stone Warden, Ashes, and Embers). I've just tried to start a new character again, and the same thing happened, with no new error mesage generated in the werr...
