The reason I turned to roguelikes was that I had played modern games and thought they put too much attention to graphics and not enough on depth. I agree completely, and I could, at least from a personal perspective, narrow down when the games companies really started doing this. Something I've jus...

31, and glad to see there's a few others in that bracket. I'm suspecting there's a few players of that age range, what with Moria and its descendants having been around 20-odd years.

Yeah, that's been my experience, too. I think the combat side of things must appeal to the male adolescent ;)

If the demographic is anything similar to MUD players, it'll be males in the majority, but not by as much as you might expect. In a poll I did for Aardwolf, about a third of players were (or claimed to be) female. This bore little relation to the genders of their characters, which had about an 80/20...

I don't know about useful, but I've certainly bookmarked this thread. DitL stories are always pretty entertaining, especially Mayliths :)

And yeah, I personally wouldn't mind seeing a board for these. It'd keep them all nicely together.

Twice in Nethack. Would have been three, but it crashed irrecoverably just before the astral plane.

I tend to pick as the whim suits me. And then the choice gets further randomised by those crazy traps ;)

I've died often enough in roguelike that I don't really get upset enough to cheat. I used to use explore mode in Nethack/SLASH'EM, but I found that for some reason I did much better without that on. Since then, I've never bothered in any roguelike.

Haven't seen the third one yet. In no major rush to. But then, I wouldn't class myself as a Tolkien enthusiast. Like the books, but they could stand to have a little less poetry and scenery, and a little more character development. Like the movies, or at least the two I've seen, but... yeah, pretty ...

I'm gonna say Nethack just to be controversial, and because it's the only roguelike I've ever completed ;) I tend to go through moods, though. I can be on a Nethack kick for months, then switch over to ADOM for ages, and then back. ToME reminds me very much of ADOM, though I think it's keeping my at...

I voted warrior. I wouldn't say it's exactly my favorite, but it's the one I stick to for the moment. I figured I want to win with a 'basic' character before using one more complex.

I like both, to be honest, along with several of the other variants like Zang, Heng, and Eyang. Which one I play depends on what mood I'm in. ToME's probably the one I spend most time on, but the others all have their good points.

What Hunter said. I'm basically too lazy to remember how they work and to use them. I used to be the same with Nethack, I could count the number of times I've bothered to inscribe Elbereth on one hand.

How would that work with dungeons where you don't really go up or down? I always imagined that in the cases of Mirkwood and the Old Forest, going 'deeper' would simply be a case of 'closer to the heart of'. Similar for the barrow downs, as weren't they just a bunch of ancient burial mounds in the bo...

I use three. The main one, on 10X20 font, monster recall bottom left, in 6X10, and message history, bottom right, also small. I'd probably use visible monsters, but I can't find a way of placing four windows in a pleasing manner, so I manage ;)
