Well, yeah, for a melee build i wont argue against using a 2hander. I havent looked much into the class since it was changed, so i wasnt aware that melee seems to be the go to strategy for mindslayer.
For my current char, though, i am using the focus tree to kite and kill stuff, and its very effective, and since i am rarely in melee, the gem is a no-brainer imo.

As for the actual general usefulness of the stats, getting an early tier3 gem can be a great boon to meet gear requirements or skill requirements. For late game, i expect the stat bonus to be less immediately useful, but its still a bunch of hp, psi, saves, and more, and the gem's stats on top (which are certainly not negligible).

Meeting equip stat restrictions doesn't mean you have to use the gem all the time -you can just switch it in and out. The saves and hp boni are pretty much completely useless on higher difficulties. Also the best two-handers I've seen have something like + 40 % phys damage and 20 % phys res pen + X all weapon crit chance (just to name the best stats*) which mop the floor with every single gem stat*wise.

More generally: Gems can't be randarts, weapons can. So even if we exclude the benefits of having an extra super attack all the time (but why would want to exclude this??), the best weapons, especially on higher difficulties, even have better stats* than gems.

*by stats in this instance I mean attributes (wil, con, etc.) + other properties that affect all weapons ie. "when wielded/worn" effects.

I still think you need to distinguish between builds though. I cant speak for higher difficulties with any certainty, since i dont have experience with them.
But what youre saying is that even "when worn" bonuses outperform gems. Ill concede that in the end the +base stats (will, con, str, dex, cun, mag) probably will not make any real difference, so then we're left comparing other bonuses + frenzied focus. And then we're back at builds.
Since its only ranged mindpower builds that we seem to disagree on, lets look at that.
Getting a single element boost is not that great, since mindslayer's ranged mind powers are of 4 different elements, its something though. Compared to a tier 5 gem, which gives +10% all damage and 5% all crit, i dunno, i wouldnt value one too much over the other.
It definitely hurts gems that they cant be randarts, but the artifact gems arent exactly bad either, take goedelath rock for example, 50% healmod as well as +9% all damage, that is great.

I could be in denial, i really could, but i see almost to benefit to switching my gem on my current mindslayer, i am rarely in melee range, so it does more or less nothing most of the time.

ill try putting on the next good 2hander i find though, to see it in action

I think I went through it in another thread, but a 2h in TK slot is a no brainer. 15 extra stats is completely irrelevant when compared to an extra attack.

The bonus stats are relevant at level-up.

I managed to get to level 50 on insane roguelike during my 1st attempt with a melee mindslayer:

This was my 1st time trying out the revamped mindslayer. They're pretty easy. I spent most of the game crippling/confusing/stunning enemies to death.

The naloren legacy is a nice weapon, especially with frenzied focus. It cleared pride floors pretty quickly. Next time I'll take flexible combat.

Edit:

One-handed weapon with mindstar is the most effective overall. It's easier to find a dagger with good procs, but the damage is worse. Using two-handed weapons in both slots was the least effective. I haven't tried psiblades, since I was playing a ghoul.
