Leot's Journey

#1 Post by Leot »

Now begins the quest to beat ToME using each class on at least Nitemare difficulty. A tall task when I have only beaten the game on Normal once and no other time. This is all stream of consciousness, and one day i will upload it to my website, which does not currently exist. I'm an SEO by profession so I can simply sneeze out a good looking site by accident in no time at all when I have the inclination to do so.

First up we have Possessor.

After looking at the talents Possessors I immediately notice that they are a kind of "melee solipsist". Looking at their powers I also see that they are supposed to be switching between weapon sets.

I see drawbacks:

-Damage subtracts points from my PSI
-Melee bodies are hit often
-Many of the activated abilities cost PSI
-Trying to possess bodies costs PSI

What all of the above means it that in battle a Possessor needs to decide whether it will use a bunch of good combat abilities, or simply use it to continue to switch bodies once one dies. Assume form costs 10 psi so there is a VERY good chance that I would be stuck without any options, no ability to utilize any of my abilities, and a very weak -4 life character. If I'm hit hard enough to need a new body, I better have the PSI to do so right when I need it.

...maybe they won't hit THAT hard

I also notice I have a single Class Point spent in a tree that is no unlocked.

I choose Cornac for it's bonus points and Cat point, and the fact that I like them. The solution to maintaining PSI seems to be a huge amount of healing, which the Fungal Tree will help with nicely.

I'm a pretty redheaded female. The game character is pretty nice looking too.

Three combat trees are based on a two handed weapon, a mindstar and a one handed weapon, and two mindstars. I'm interested in answering the age old question of
"What will keep me alive?"

Psionic Disruption from the Battle Psionics tree is a sustain ability that requires you to have the correct weapon equipped. It has stacking a DoT. It works on bump attacks, but only if you have the correct weapon, and I have learned that it won't switch to the weapons you need to activate the On-Hit effect. In other words: You may end up sustaining a talents you can't currently use.

Force Shield from the Psychic Blows is a sustain ability that grants a max to damage you can take (It says 94% life, is that character life or body life?), grants evasion, and allows you to counter attacks. As above, it will not automatically switch to the required equipment upon being hit.

Knowing the above, these two talents are mutually exclusive.

"What will keep me alive?"

Psychic Blows also has a "Get away from me" panic button? Sold. I'm going there.

I place a point into Solipsism and realize that while it will help me regen PSI faster, it will also cause me to drain it faster as well. As I have that Solipsism threshold I firmly feel that this is, for now, a huge debuff as a good strong hit can have my global speed decrease in a single turn.

I spend my Cat point in Body Snatcher as (WHY WOULD I HAVE A POINT IN A TREE THAT IS LOCKED) more bodies is better than no bodies, and that Psionic Duplication is sexy looking.

I start off with no bodies to use, and a wolf takes me down to half PSI after I use my Psionic CRUSH ability once.

I also learn that I can't possess giants despite having started off with that category unlocked last time. I give it a pass. I'd rather be a fire breathing Ritch or Dragon than a smelly ol' Giant anyway.

"Immoveable" is a type of creature. I don't want to burn a choice on it, but flooding a level with nothing but bees is a funny idea. I'll save it for a Bandit Lord or something to test.
The tree is kicking my butt! No worries: I'm positive that my 8 DMG a round will prevail!

Level 2 comes. It is only now that i realize that floating points is a thing of the past. 3/6 of the class trees I have access to all have "Permanently alter the world" tags on them. The other 3 trees are weapon specific trees, of which only 2 can properly be used at a time.

I learn that Rabbits are not animals, they are Vermin. How counter-intuitive.

I BECOME THE THING WE ALL LOVE TO HATE: The weapon wielding snake. I bash a mouse with my two handed ax. He tanks the blow and promptly deals 5 damage, forcing me out as it only had 3 life anyway. I accidently kill him the turn after (I use roguelike controls FTW).

While in a Body you cannot heal its HP. It doesn't really matter as Solipsism takes damage from your PSI, and you CAN heal that. Therefore: Solipsism does double duty of suddenly becoming body health (allowing you to tank more) and a way of healing (PSI... which is pretty much the same as health).

Jellies are also immovable.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A RANDOM ster APPEARS!
What do you mean by Ogre? Will they allow me to take advantage of both the two handed sustain and one handed one mindstar sustain via bump attacks and being hit?
Thanks to ster... I found out that I have a bug, and thus started with no bodies. Let me try a new character and see if this is the case.
I create Leot the Test, and discover that it WAS a bug. In fact if you choose NO to accept changes in the initial character screen you lose all your bodies, and the giant subtype for possession reasons. How terrible. I shall now restart for real.
Leot the Possessor II now exists!!! Now with 100% less bugs (in theory)
I have noticed that I can't create a psionic clone of a person unless the space direct behind them is empty. No clones in large enemy packs? We will see...
MY FIRST ESCORT!
Keeping in mind that I'm going AM, I'm going to look up that fancy list of escort rewards here:
https://te4.org/wiki/Escorts
In most games I tend to have my first escort be a Warrior for that sweet sweet Vitality point, but I stop to take a look at my other options.
Possessors don't have many generic skill choices to start, and with Cornac I have several Cat points to grab. I could simply grab several Mind Sears and be a pretend Snow Giant Solipsist with really high stats and several bodies worth of HP.
I could also grab Feedback for Survivability reasons. This could come as a great "Oh Crap!" button, especially since I will have a lot of HP to burn through. With AM I would be using a bunch of my generics as is. This would make me tight on Generic Points, and loose on Class Points in the long run.
What do you think dear reader (going to grab dinner with the folks)?
Well I was told in the IRC that going AM prevents me from using any forms' magic abilities, and that It was bad and I should feel bad about suggesting it. Thanks BadBadger! You both taught me things AND made me feel bad for my life decisions, just like mom used to! (Seriously, thank you)
This makes my choice easy: Tinkering.
Now I have to think about this a bit. There really is no real deviance in how to build the possessor generic wise. You can grab some new trees from escorts, but you are the opposite of starved for points, and few things will give you the versatility of tinkers.
Now if we assume that a person is NOT Cornac then we will have 4 cat points over the course of the game. There are 2 locked trees for possessors. It is also assumed that you will want to hit that magic talent level 7 for possession so you can steal Boss' bodies. If you unlocked everything you would have 1 left, presumably for an insciption slot.
If you ARE a Cornac then you don't have a racial tree (more gen points) and a cat point (plus bonus class and gen points as you level as per 1.5 update). You could spend this and have everything unlocked, upgraded and maxed out inscriptions. You could ALSO use 1 for the sheer versatility and boosts of tinkering.
I learned something new: Status effects carry over. If I was poisoned, and then transform my body completely into a brand new structure with a new amount of mass, bone, flesh and blood... I'm still poisoned. Huh.
You know one thing that comes to mind: I wonder why I still need high strength to wield a greatsword when:
A)- It vanishes when I shape shift
B)- I know I can tranform both my body and my items
Would it not make more sense if possessors had a version of Lethality's "Use cunning in place of strength" ability? I'm transforming into a horror made of blades because I believe I can, why would I suddenly find holding a sword to be too hard?
Trollmire down, but Bill can wait until later. I've heard Possessors are OP, but right now the only OP thing baout me is the fact that I'm Obviously Puny (heh). ONWARDS TO Kor'Pul!!
Avast! A Loremaster who just happens to have the Mind Sear I would like to have. How randomly fortuitous! Especially when the portal is just to the south. Now I can take a break from my normal 20'a and do 50 every other turn.
There are undead everywhere, and thinking to the future when I will face The Master, I realize that Undead wouldn't be a bad category to be able to possess. I snag a tasty tasty mage and move on.
There is an issue. I was going to Assume Form, and I have an ooze in there. I don't ever remember agreeing to possess this ooze ever before. Oh well... I just hope that Vermin are a worthwhile category to have, and i have better things to look forward to than just being a rat forever...
Let's try out the mage and see what the fu.... Oh My Gosh! I didn't even need Mind Sear. I am suddenly filled with vigor and vim (not the resource, get out of here with you spatulas!) I feel like a mortar emplacement was launched out of a battleship cannon!
Maybe not so much, and perhaps this is what Archmages feel all the time, but going from a melee character that was picked on by Rogues in school to a one man firing squad of death is pretty cool. Not going to lie.
Alright. I'm going to have to figure out this strength issue. I like the two handed weapon tree (mostly for the "Get the eff away from me" skill and the sweet "stayin' alive" sustain) but I will want to upgrade my weaponry eventually! I suppose I could find a nice staff... but then I would have to boost magic.
Life is hard!
Speaking of hard... I still haven't spent most of my class skill points. I immediately boostthe two handed sustain to level 2 (I'll float the point to test it) and realize that my life is not my own. Rather my life bar doesn't really matter, only my PSI bar. Jumping to the next level of Solipsism is not a terrible thing. I mean... I didn't do it because of that threshold (I'll cross that line when I'm good and ready) but I'm not as worried.
2 Points into self preservation. The first gives +34% stat retention, the second +35%, the third +7%.
*Turns around* Hey guys, I think we found the break point!
I'm also at 4 in Solipsism in the Solipsism tree!
Running around watching things throw themselves at my shield and die is fun!
Another escort, another thief. Now I have heightened Senses. Always useful.
The shield sustain in the Psychic Blows tree is better than I though. All on hit PROCs can activate whenever an enemy hits me (once per turn).
Some Previous Highlights of our adventure so far:
https://z73i.imgup.net/201703171597dc.jpg
I swear I'm a strong adventurer! Really!
https://u47i.imgup.net/2017031715c4ca.jpg
You CAN suicide on an immobile tree.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Today I learned that skeletal archers do not confer the "shoot" talent, so any archers whose bodies I may have grabbed are unfortunately more akin to Degenerated than they are to the Skeletal Mages.

https://p51i.imgup.net/2017031813174c.jpg

Well Since I'm using pictures now, this is what my skill page looks like for right now. I know I went heavy in Solipsism right now, and it is denying me the Psionic Duplication skill I waas lusting after, but I'm okay with my life decisions so far. A bunch of Generics with no home exist, and I'm not sure if I want to rank up Str for bigger and better weapons, or Cunning for Mindpower (It will be cunning, but I will make the decision slowly.)

Looking at the Channel Pain skill... each level helps decrease the cost of the damage mitigation. This may be worth it by itself... but we will see when I have a huge PSI pool

First Death! I found a little mini vault and the Oozing Horror Grappled me. Not even my furious amount of body changing could save me, and I fell quickly. This will teach me about the benefits of keeping escape options. I have the Planar Beacon light source, but when with a 15DMG retaliation brass lantern. Noobie mistake.

After being teleported back to the mortal plane (and the world map) I see that as my level is 8, I can afford to go wrestle in the arena!

"You may not possess a creature of this rank: Elite" - In future runs I should definitely rush Possession 3.

I beat the arena easily, and head back to town. You know what is neat? Even when I'm a Skeletal Mage the Townsfolk don't care. The Undead races really got the short end of the stick.

https://f16i.imgup.net/2017031813f250.jpg

"Well yeah... he may look, act, talk, fight, and MOVE like an Undead... but he isn't ACTUALLY Undead."

I also stole a Bandit's body, transformed into it, and received the ability of Highborn's Bloom. I've never really touched Highborn, but the description of "Will no use resources" had me curious. I create a Psionic Minion to answer the question: Are bodies considered a resource?

Survey Says: They are not a resource, and are used up accordingly. Darn.

I meet up with the Assassin lord,, who is 9 levels above me , bring out my Arcane Blade Minion, transform into a Halfling Skirmisher and...

Leot the Possessor is the third in the grand "the Possessor" lineage. Little is knowna bout her as she has yet to prove himself in the arena of the actual world. Though rumors of her just cheating off others' efforts ran amuck in college, no one was ever able to prove anything.

She becomes a forest troll and is quickly beaten into submission. The shock of her body dying is so terrible that she immediaately gains a level... >.>

I get into a 1 on 1 melee with a Stone Troll who promptly says "Don't bring a two handed ax to a Gang War!!" His good friend: Bees show off their kung-fu skills with doing a 42 hit combo on my face without me having a chance to react. I'm still alive until they use their finisher: another 42 hit combo!

Word of advice, the one hander + mindstar skills do far more damage early game and are very useful to carry yourself through the T1's/early T2's.

Serious like a...

https://a73i.imgup.net/Capturedb0b.JPG

Simple start, trying the mindstar and one handed just for early damage. I will float the the points. Tinker escort. Hoora--
OF COURSE THE FOREST TROLL HEDGE WIZARD IS NEXT TO THE BEGINNING!

https://f15i.imgup.net/20170318154074.jpg

Apparently the Psionic Disruption is really good for the early game. We will see if it stacks with the shield so long as I have the right weapon equipped.

He drops, as does his Rune of Reflection. 152 more life for bodies as well? Sign me up!

Thief Escort next for the happy healthy Heightened senses. I like believe our conversation went like this:

"Hey yo, I'm really scared, can you escort me to the portal right over there?"
"The one ten feet from us?"
"Yeah!"
"The one with no enemies next to it?"
"Yeah!!"
"..."
"YEAH!!!"
"Teach me Heightened Senses"
"You drive a hard bargain Mr. Wolf... but alright I'll teach you Hei-... OH NO I TRIPPED RIGHT INTO THE PORTAL"
*Pockets Thief's Eyes for... perception reasons*

https://x38i.imgup.net/201703181624fd.jpg

It is officially. Force Shield and Psionic Disruption do not activate at the same time. You have to be wielding the correct weapon set at time of attack and or hit respectively.

https://p53i.imgup.net/20170318167375.jpg

We can still maintain both. There is no hint in the text or skill descriptions that mentions it and I, for one, am unhappy. I will complain to our Cornac overlords about this.

Kor'Pul is filled with Rand Bosses so I make sure to grab at least one (a summoner). This time I do not have to live with the decision for vermin, though 4 of the Rand Bosses were mice. They will rise up I tell you.

I finally unlocked the Psionic Duplication skill I've been wanting since day 1. Now all my bodies have a number higher than 1 by uses. Neat! No more scrounging for bodies everywhere.

https://f54i.imgup.net/2017031817dd95.jpg

Having grabbed more Rand Bosses I see now that Psionic Duplication will need to be at least level 4 so that I may grab more than one copy at a time.

I picked up Elemental possession type upon watching an Umber Hulk walk through walls. I can see this being EXTREMELY useful in the future. Plus... elementals don't suck.

I admit to enjoy some pleasure in hollowing out the Spectre's home after I get rid of him.

https://e07i.imgup.net/20170318197b24.jpg

I ROFLSTOMP the arena and move on to Norgos lair. It gall good until I decide to find that alchemist with his lovely +2 class points and accidentally stumble upon a cry for help from random tunnels. I meet a man with a purple border and soon... well...

https://v40i.imgup.net/2017031900a75e.jpg

I come back from the Eidolon, and using the wisdom passed down from her forebear's (and an Ultimate Shivgoroth's form) handily wipes the floor with the Assassin Lord! Those rare orange items will be mine, and no one can say anything about it!!

To the Deep Below!

A Cursed Rand Boss just out of eye sight and his 4(!) Dwarven faced flying “brecklorn” friends kill me before I have a chance to react. I jump back and slay them all with a well placed use of the Rune of Reflection and snatch a Regen Infusion of the Psychic. Finally a low cooldown tool that scales with stats I actually care about.

This place makes me wonder if I should pick up Horrors as a creature type to possess. Thinking about all the places they show up makes this seem appealing, but I have to draw the line somewhere, else the line will be drawn for me...
Level 11 ho! This is where my stats are now (after removing floating points):

https://v74i.imgup.net/2017031912b104.jpg

I've noticed that in many of my combats I do not go through PSI nearly as much as I did in my previous adventures, and as such I'm almost always full. This indicates that I have resources I'm not taking advantage of.

I'm also aware that if I drop 3 class points into Psionic Duplication that I will be able to store 7(!) bodies of normal creatures and 2 from any Randbosses I come across. This leaves me with 4 left. I can float 3 into Psionic Disruption, as I have been, and place 1 point into Possession, putting me only 1 Cat point away from stealing Boss rank bodies for my own use. I am also aware of the fact that next level is 12 and has the ever important Cannabalize ability.

Now I'm a huge fan of passives, but at level 12 I would also have the ability to gain another great survival tool: Psionic Block. This is a 4 Class point investment, and one I would be happy to make. Shockstar seems like a decent attack skill, Dazzling lights is underwhelming as it seems to rely on bypassing saves but doesn't mention what saves it needs to beat.

As a last thing to make a point of: Psionic Disruption... the only complaint I have about it is the lack of flavor. I know it creates a DoT from disruption, but WHAT is it disrupting? Reality? Atomic coherence? Life processes? Mind? Is it creating a mind link that slowly destroys the enemy mind thereby tying in with the flavor of Possession in that an enemy's mind is broken?

On the generic side of things, you will notice I have taken the point from Channel Pain out. While it sound good, this one skill has single-handed emptied my PSI bar, and put me in many dangerous positions. I either need more PSI, or to invest points into it to get the cost down.

Also on the subject of generic talents: Tinkers. I'm hoarding my gen points so I can grab Tinker and load up on those. I need the 500 Gold to get it, and I'm sitting on my level 10 Cat point for it!

I have a feeling my game will be divided into two parts: Before Tinkers and after Tinkers. We shall see.

This is where I'm sitting for now:

https://y18i.imgup.net/20170319130f39.jpg

The Possessor is starting to hit its stride with the new Psionic Duplication. I not have the feeling of desparation of wondering where my next meal... body is going to come from. This allows me to walk around with a cheap “Throwaway” Body like a simple Ghoul or Skeletal Warrior and have that nice HP buffer/talent pool.

I find this interesting ring:

https://i82i.imgup.net/Capturef253.JPG

I can't tell if it gives the enemies 15% Damage reduction, or me. Let's find out!

A fun test to try out next time: Be Possessor, and possess Slimy Crawler. Suicide the body. How is it all programmed? Can I force the Mouth's death as it is hardcoded that a Slimy Crawler will affect its health? I doubt it, but... but... SCIENCE!

The Mouth goes down more easily than normal. Psionic Disruption allows me to kill a Slimy Crawler in two hits, and my shield is set to autocast once an enemy is adjacent. I pop out of my hiding spot to say hello, duck back in, and the Slimy Crawler's bonus speed works against it. It runs up and hits my Rune of Reflection, is beaten down, and by the time everything is off cooldown another Slimy Crawler has spawned.

Ding! Level 12!

A point in Cannabilize and a point in Full Control for me!

https://y40i.imgup.net/2017031913543e.jpg

I meet up with the Alchemist tucked far away in the mountains to the west. He needs an orc heart so I head back to the dwarven city and delve into Reknor where I find a shielding Run of the Psychic, which is twice as powerful as the Rune of Reflection.

Possessor bodies have a hard time healing, but these Runes are a godsend for longevity!

A Wild Bandit Lord appears! Now it's time for some Shenanigans. I can summon as many minions as I want as long as my equilibrium holds out. HOWEVER, I can just shift back to normal form, then back to Bandit Lord to immediately brings my Equilibrium to 0. The only reason I can see for me not wanting to have a private army is if I do not get to enjoy the experience for things they kill.

Never mind. Your minions do not follow you, just stand around uselessly. I also tried to possess one for infinity body creation, but you can't possess things you summoned. Well played Devs, well played.

Norgos goes down like a chump, though I forgot I don't have the cat point in Possession yet so can't snag his body. As funny as it sound 7 uses from 7 bodies isn't really enough for me. I may spend a class point to be able to store more. I have my valuable boss destroying bodies, my casual run of the mill high health for exploring bodies, ranged bodies etc.

Something annoying: Ranged bodies such as Orc Archers or Steamgunners are not as obviously good investment as one would think. Possessors start with a point in Heavy Armor Training, but do no natively have the talent shoot. Now Shoot is just a gold expenditure away. Further more, when you transform into a Skeleton Archer, you need to have a bow equipped and arrows (or shots with sling or guns).

This brings about the question of what weapons am I using in my other bodies? Obviously I do not create them when I shift form, as all of my Mindstar talents work. It is just weird to think that now I have become the dual wielding ooze we have learned to love.

...still an ooze with the Skullcrusher talent...

As I head to the Heart of the Gloom I become increasingly aware of the fact that I don't really have a viable escape option. No Movement inscription, no teleporting. I need to keep my eyes open for something better than Eden's Guile to rely on.

I meet The Dreaming One on the final level. It involves himself and several of his minions standing just outside the 5 range barrier DG has given them. Thanks DarkGod! Thank you for fulfilling my dream of being a War Bear!
https://e47i.imgup.net/20170319222858.jpg

Tinker crafts! Finally. I had 10 gen points saved up, now I will be able to dump them everywhere. Soon I will be a bear with guns (Totally different that a Yeti, I swear)

https://e66i.imgup.net/20170319222561.jpg

Heading to the fortress I meet this guy: A Dual Gun Wielding pant with a permanent grin on his face. I'm not sure how you can be an immobile type creature and still possess the Agile Gunner talent. This vexes me so.

Don't worry guys, Leot The Possessor IV in War Bear form disarmed him han--- oh... well I guess neither have... uh... never mind.

You know what is great? Having the body of a creature double your level. That is what is great.

https://v57i.imgup.net/20170319234405.jpg

Another oddity: As funny as it is, I can sort of figure out a way for a snake to use a bow and arrow... but dual wielding guns?

Well as anything with two guns will do to your character: I took a lot of damage. However, it did give me a chance to use my new Pain Suppressor Salve. The –life works on your bodies, and as status effects stick with you when you bounce back, I presume it would stick with your regular body, effectively granting +(-life before death) x 2. Neat!

Also found a new bug: As I cannot regain health in a possessed body, I do not snap up to 1 HP when the Pain Suppressor Salve wears off. I'm permanently stuck at -199 life.

That being said, I'm getting out of this body and into my real one right quick. I don't want the -199 to be associated with my real body once the game catches on!

I have also noticed several cosmetic bugs in this game. My shield won't go down when the shield rune runs out. In the above picture I am frozen in an ice cube, but you would never be able to tell!

In this picture I do not have an active shield rune effect:

The worst guarded secret: Undead don't need to breathe underwater.

The second level is the Alt of this place, and realizing that I have only one chance to capture the Weirdling, I decide to turn back. With a brief dip into the Sandworm's lair I grab the sandworm tooth needed to finish the Elixer of Focus. This is my stat page right now:

As you can see I bit the bullet and lowered my per turn damage through Psionic Disruption to grab the shield with a % chance to ignore all incoming damage. I'm not sure I made the right decision, but I can always change it later if I need to.

Another interesting bug: I can float points in trees. I received a point in Track from a thief, and a point in Heightened Senses from a thief. I wanted to put a point into Senses, then decided to put it elsewhere, but I could not take it out! Even though I hadn't even left the window or accepted my choices the game held my gen point hostage.

Hey, another Possessor question: How do creature of your body type know to attack you? How does a Boulder Giant know to throw boulders at this other Boulder Giant waaaaaaay off in the distance?

Alright, restarting this thread. I'm committed to beating this game with every class and documenting it in a non-let’s play style!

To this end I am allowing people to vote for what race class combination I should attempt. If I don’t hear anything I will simply go in alphabetical order for classes, and use Cornac for race as they allow both flexibility without having a huge impact.
