Non-spoiler tips & tricks

#1 Post by achoice »

Hi, lets share "non spoiler" tips and tricks. During years of playing I've found basic "tactics" that help allot. Example (I hope none is considered "spoilish");
  1. 'z' - rest & auto explore. (used all the time, but be careful in world map ...)
  2. Auto use offense: I always put my main long range spell beam on "When enemy visible". (for melee characters I might use "... and adjacent".
  3. Auto use defense: I always a shield to trigger "When enemy visible" - or if I'm confident only when " ... adjacent" ...
  4. Re-size toolbar suitably by "unlock interface"-padlock icon. Similarly resize & move log and chat panes.
  5. Take care placing icons. cluster attack/defense. I use 1,2,3 , shift 1,2,3, ctrl 1,2,3 allot. What do you use? Any tips on effective key mappings?
  6. Hover mouse cursor above enemy to see detailed info. Especially level & resists. When opening a vault I always first check the level of monsters inside.
  7. 'Space key' works same as enter key for accepting selected target.
  8. Use the farportal in Sher'Tul Fortress if your character is leveling to slow.
  9. Use in-game chat ('Space key') to ask quick, small questions.
  10. The wiki keeps getting more helpful, http://te4.org/wiki/Tales_of_Maj'Eyal_Wiki
  11. If you need extra help, check spoiler section in forum. There are great some guides there, http://forums.te4.org/viewforum.php?f=41
  12. I THINK playing more than one character makes the loss of one less devastating ... but I don't have this commitment or time. :)
  13. Enemies with Shielding also have timeout on their shields. Ie. instead of bashing the shield - wait some turns for their shield to expire. (Believe it or not - I "discovered" this recently - after playing tome for years ...)
Please - contribute your tips and tricks for efficient ToME playing! :D

Good post. Specially for newer players, but I read some new things as well.

Another tip: only walls that say "diggable" when you hover your mouse over it are diggable.
It's that somebody on the chat told me, because after 8 months of this game I thought pickaxes were bugged, because they never worked. I actually didnt even carry one with me anymore since I was convinced that they didnt work.

Thank you! I will try to think of something to contribute. For now...I struggle with finding a good way to use the tool bars. ...and it's a struggle when the main one is full. Do you mind expanding on what you know? I will try what you mentioned. I tried it before with a character that I would switch weapons frequently with (ranged and up close combat) but stuff kept getting over written. The only thing I can think of is to turn off the setting to automatically add talents.

Anyway, I would LOVE to see any ideas about managing the tool bar...or talent bar or whatever we call it. I hope your post gets more hits. There are many places in the game that it would be nice to see tips for.

Try a vertical toolbar (actually a block) 4 wide x 15 high, in the bottom left corner, with the smallest (32x32) icon size. That way you can access everything without having to scroll, and the toolbar doesn't overlap your field of vision (unless you're a Higher or have a very good lite.)

1) always carry a status removal with you.

2) if you are unsure of what enemy is capable of, inspect it (right-click) (or inspect self with C by default)

3) auto use "shot" on left-click on target enemy.

4) It never hurts to take a look at a low lvl zone. (as in, before you go anywhere, check all t1 zones (except for 1 event)).

5) take your time, (and if you are a chronomancer, enemy's too) its a turn based game.

6) when you enter a new area, check everything BEFORE you charge at the boss.
6.1) get some detection. some items come with "track", and don't underestimate a telepathy.

7) you can drawn.
7.1) and so can every (non undead/construct) mob that is not exclusively spawning in an underwater lvl.

8) most of the runes and infusions scale with a random stat. one that is stronger now, may be weaker later.
8.1) "warrior's" strength, "duellist's" dexterity, "titans" constitution, "wizards" magic, "psychics" willpower, "sneak's" cunning.
8.2) if you think there is even a slightest possibility of you using it, keep it.

9) while escorts always jump into the abyss, the reward is usually worth the trouble.
9.1) especially if its a passive or a sustain.

10) VISION: this game can randomly spawn a rare with powers that counter yours. getting information about the map can often be vital for your survival.

11) if the doors are locked, its probably for a good reason.

12) if you are unsure whether you can delay your healing or not, don't.
12.1) shield runes don't take time to cast.

13) two words - "stats juggling". you will understand as soon as you feel the need to do it.

Whenever you choose "restart with the same character", or use the "load premade" option at character generation, your escorts will be distributed in the same locations as last time. This means that if you don't like where your escorts are (say, too many in Dreadfell and/or none in your starting dungeons), then when you die, you should always choose "restart with a new character" instead to reroll them. Do this each time you die, and eventually that character will end up with a good escort distribution and you can just "restart with the same character" or "load premade" each time after that to keep them.

The idea of changing the skills bar has been just AWESOME. I'm liking it at the bottom, same as default mostly, with it set to 2x28. I can now group things according to close encounter attacks, ranged attacks, heals, buff, de-buffs, movement.....etc. Very nice.
