Hi

ADOM and Tome are my two favourite roguelikes, I have used these forums much in the past but I see you guys were hacked so it seems alot of info is missing.

Anyway I was curious as to which ace is best suited to a wizard, Im toying with high elf but then they have an exp penalty. What do you folks think?

I am still new maybe borderline intermediate roguelike player but after getting past the dwarf town in adom with a wizard Im ready to try a wizard for the first time in TOME since I like the class, very highly interesting with all the spells and stuff that comes with a caster.

Thanks :)

One other thing, since you folks were hacked well sorry to ask this but have the passwords been compromised? Its just if so I may need to change my password in some other places.

Im really sorry to hear this place has been hacked, I cant understand why people would want to hack this site or the sites of the roguelike community in general since the communities are top notch.

Just to update Im rolling a dark elf caster, I was going to go sorceror but it says in help that they lost hp for casting spells or something? Is that right? I was kinda hoping to be able to master lots of spells but losing hp sounds bad, elemental mage I am also considering, but does that include magic missle?

Im also having a problem with something that is a bug, I see the bug report forum says bugs are now on the wiki , I have never signed up for the wiki but I have been through the somewhat cumbersone bug system and the only thing I could find of relevance was this

http://wiki.t-o-m-e.net/BugReport830

Basically in vista I get no fonts, so I did the final suggestion which was to change 0x7f to xxxx etc and it kinda fixed it buy trees look like a green diamond? this cant be how tome is suppossed to look is it?

I could rename the file suggested is that the best way and does that yield the best ascii fonts? I dont want to use graphical tiles but if you have like refined ascii text I am happy with that.

Kinda need some personal feedback as to how to fix this bug, thanks

Just to update I can get it working both ways now but 1 way trees are diamond green blocks , the other way deleting the file trees are just straight ascii so prob kinda solved, what Im actually interested in is what exactly was the intended way to play looks wise (On the non tile version) ? Also if theres a fix that utilises some form or thing likened to extended ascii I would like to do that

Dark God's password was hacked, but no one else's. Administrators can't see user's passwords, although we can change them.

If you are going to play a magic user, sorcerors are much more powerful than wizards. They lose hp, but if you are careful nothing will ever get the chance to hit you.

For an easy one, pick a race with lots of hit points. Death molds are the most powerful, but they have a funky movement and are frustrating until you get used to them. I would start with a troll, ent, dunedan, or high elf.

Huge thanks yottle :)

I tried a dark elf mage and I was out of mana before I could kill a single rogue, however I will try what you suggest, furthermore what strength con stats should I roll? Say str 9 con 9? and high int wis?

Also should I focus on melee to start with?

Once I know this Im set :)

Another thing is Im finding it tricky to set a macro that when pressed just opens up my books so all I have to do is say press key 1

Books get shown
choose a book
Fire

Need to find out how to repeat last cast as well.

One final thing then I am set :) I essentially went dundean sorceror therefore what melee weapons can/should I buy? I just bought a short sword and it says i am uncomfortable with it, is it just staffs I should buy? (havent seen those in shop)

Armour is another thing, does it affect casting and is leather armour okay to wear?

I figure I should ask everything in the one place , sorry about this :)

So I created a macro for manathrust, the first thing I did was go into the place that has rogues and Im reallyy struggling, I can take down 1 rogue but they swamp me and I die , so how can I grind them start game with a sorceror? Or is there a better place I should grind to say level 5?

Just to update again , that first rogue lvl was tough but I managed to adopt a start game way of doing it and I leveled to lvl 2 , I put points say 3 in magic 2 in mana and one in fire but I would be interested to hear from people who have played sorcerors as to what skills they think I should focus on

Hopefully this post with all its questions ends up helping other newbies :) Its a real shame alot of the old posts seem unavailable.

Keep in mind I'm not real good at this. But consistently finish the first 2 or 3 dungeons.
When I play magic users I never melee.
A sorcerer will start with manathrust.
Do you know about changing your speed. Press "C" to open the character screen, then use "e" and "t" to cycle your pace and attacking stance. You should set a sorcerer to "Running" and "Coward".
For the rogues, you need to isolate them. If your are "Running" you will be faster than them. So get them to follow you and you can usually get them into the top left/right corridor one at a time. Then just manathrust.

A couple of rogues will get you up a level. Initially put my skill points into Magic for the first level or two. This will get your spell points up. After that a sorcerer is all about spell power and sorcery.

I ended up putting in lots of points to the mana school since mana thrust is in that plus I put some in magic , I will focus on sorcery next time since I didnt see the reply until after I levelled, I also read the help on sorcerory and I got the impression it was something to do with casting spells frrom hp? So wasnt sure what its benefits were, does it increase the amount of spells you can learn or their power or something?

I knew about the tactics setting but I did not know about running :) so what a differance that will make! cheers :)

I just got my first god quest to find some temple and also a quest to go into the barows, Im lvl 5 so not sure if I should go there, I also have a farmers mushroom quest which is low lvl just lvl 3 but unsure where to go for that. Im almost certain there was a newbie quest guide waaay back but cant seem to find one now.

Anyway huge thanks for the response, running will help alot and Im just going to plod along

Cheers :) - As/if I manage to answer my own questions I will when have them all answered put the answers in this thread

You should check out Lord Dimwit's strategy guide on the wiki.

When I start a sorceror, I try to get strength > 12, maximize constitution, and then get as close to maximized intelligence as possible. If I don't think that I can kill the rogues I go to the grass and kill ants to get up a level or two.

Appreciated guys

This is kinda spoilery but I just asked you folks about quests and just after doing so found a link in the wiki which appears to explain the quests:
http://wiki.t-o-m-e.net/Spoilers/Quests
I will check out Lord Dimwit's guide as well

I know the easy option would be to go melee but since I got over the learning curve with casters in ADOM well so far I have concluded that yes they are squishy and slow early game but mid late game they do well plus I like being able to ID stuff etc

Im going to see if I can find a good explination of what that sorcery skill does since I plan to bump up spell power magic and probably sorcery as you guys recommend

Another small udate :)

Just reading that guide and to my understanding sorcery well does that essentially level all schools? so what I want to be doing next is max out magic, sorcery , spellpower and some in magic device?

Yep, thats pretty much it for skills as a sorcerer. Sorcery gives access to all the schools of magic. The counterweight to that is that a sorcer will get less HP as they go up levels than a normal mage would.

I never do well with sorcerors, and my only two winners had been a regular mague and a geomancer. For good starting classes I aways chose Dunedain and Dark elfs. A vampire dark-elf mague is a powerful combo if you can figure out how not to die in the daylight.

To display my spells with a single keystroke I alyaws label my book {@m0}. And the create the following macro:

\e\e\em@\r0*

And map it to 'X' or 'J'.

You can repeat your last spell (or any other action) with 'n'.

Good skills for a regular mague are mana, divination and conveyance.

Note that you can pay your sorceror as a regular mage too, actually they make better mages than mages themselves.

I hope it helps and welcome!

Anyway macro is huge help :)

Is there any way to get these macros to autoload ?? Its just whats happening consitently when Im playing is my hand is slipping near to the alt and keys near which is some command to remove all my macros! it has killed me 3 times hehe

Actually lol guys, I kinda done a bad thing :D , I just killed smeagol

Whoah I also just picked up a cave lizard egg and now it seems I have a pet, nice! Pitty I dont know how to use them but still hehe

For a magic user, you want something big and strong. A half-ogre, an Ent, even a troll. CON is really, really important.

Alternatively, you could do something completely wacky, like a Gnome zombie. I was experimenting with one of those recently, they're pretty fun - zombie means massive CON and HP, plus innate resists, hold life, see invis, slow digestion... And there's the innate FA from being a Gnome, which is awesome. Just remember to turn maximize mode off, otherwise you'll be stuck with low INT and WIS at the end.

(That character was a barehands paladin though, not a sorc. The -30% SP might hurt a sorc a lot more. On the other hand, if you find a Mage Staff of Mana you're good to go.)

If you just want to see all your books and cast from them the macro is a bit simpler:

\e\e\em@\r*

The macro I posted above is to cast spell from an specific book, whichever is inscribed @m0, but will fallback to showing all books if there's no inscribed book.
