I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but having played a little bit of 4X games lately I was musing about what one could imagine if Tales of Maj'Eyal was made into a 4X game? Judging from the lore as presented, I figure there could be some interesting prospects made and combined with many of the interesting mechanics found in today's 4X games.

For example, I could imagine the Sher'Tul Ruins acting as goodie huts - and strategic resources. There could be a multitude of factions with the Thalore, Shalore, and Nalore Elves; the varying Halfling and Human Kingdoms; various Minor races that could be interacted with (or enslaved); and of course a challenge faction known as the Orcs. Random instances could be triggered from time to time in the game - with random Necromancer attacks, roving bands of bandits or hostile enemies of some sort, or unexplainable phenomenon.

What could other people imagine if a 4X game was created from Tales of Maj'Eyal?

Colonising other worlds via exploratory farportal.
Would be a bit Dwarf Fortressy and you would win by connecting your world to the farportal network.

I don't know, I think if Farportals made an appearance they might be more useful to tie into the rest of the game then lead into their own sort of victory condition - think sort of like Warlock: Master of the Arcane where Holy Grounds would appear in abundance in other worlds.

About Victory Conditions, sere's some more thoughts to add on that:

Rule over All of Eyal (Conquest Victory)
Control of the Sher'Tul Ruins (Strategic Point Victory)
Unlock the Knowledge of the Sher'Tul (Science Victory)
Accumulation of Wealth & Power (Score Victory)
Unleash the Fury of the Spellblaze (Quest Victory)

That was more an idea for an alternative to the 4X standard game mode.

How about opening a Void Farportal as a victory condition? :twisted:

If it is easy to understand and wrap ones head around - go for it! Though I think any 4X should try to build on features from other 4x's to effectively make it as easy to understand as possible. If it introduces too many new concepts then it can be a turn off to people.

I wonder what the units in the game might look like too - or if they would look like armies or something else?

I suppose something else to consider would also be what sort of game board the 4X game based on Tales of Maj'Eyal would use as well. Would it be yet another Civ 5 clone with hexes, would it look like Endless Legends/Crusader Kings 2 with the board broken down in counties, would things be pre-existing sort of like in the Total War games?

I think I kind of like the idea that Endless Legends used with the game board broken down into counties, with the ability to build cities inside those counties where you please. I don't necessarily think you should have to be limited to one settlement in the county - though whatever amount of settlements exist inside the county would be limited to the confines of said county.
